Student Art Units : Building Students' Characters
They want to learn acting, meet more friends, and have place to hang out. These are the reasons Hombing, a Voltage Engineering major from the 2006 batch, gave for being an active member and a former chairman of the East Java Art and Culture Unit, or more widely known by the ITB community as Loedroek ITB.
"I feel that they build my character here," said Hombing when asked about the benefits of being active in the unit. "Especially in solving problems creatively, building friendly networks, and adapting to a new environment." He continued that he gained many benefits from his activities with Loedroek ITB. His cheerfulness and his many student-oriented jokes have made the identity as a Ludruk actor a part of Hombing. Perhaps you may be confused at Hombing's name, which is not an East Javanese name. You would be right to assume that he is not East Javanese, because Hombing's complete name is Johanness Rizky Sihombing, and he is Batak. Even so, in Loedroek ITB he still fits in with the other Loedroek members, to the point that he was appointed as the chairman of the Local Art Unit. This shows how diversity is a part of the ITB community. Diversity gives more color to ITB and pushes students to be more creative in campus life.
Loedroek ITB is one of 21 Art Units in ITB. Art units do not only cater to local art, but also to non-local arts such as the ITB Student Choir, Waditra Ganesha Marching Band, ITB Student Orchestra, and others.
Some feel that being active in these units can blur the students' focus to their sacademic studies, and becomes an excuse for graduating late. Hombing has his own answer : "Well, that just depends on how good you are at managing your time and your own choices. Because I think that graduating sooner or later is a choice," explained Hombing, who plans to graduate in March 2011.
