BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – ITB are proud of their students of Chemical Engineering who brought home overall winner title from National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) 2017 which was held in Malaysia. Previously, ITB students also brought home the same title in 2016. This year, NACES which carried theme Waste to Wealth, was held by Institution of Chemical Engineering Student Chapter (IChemE-SC) UiTM Shah Alam and was supported by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Malaysia. NACES took place in UiTM-owned facility, the Institute of Leadership and Development (ILD).

NACES 2017 was held on Friday-Sunday (13-15/10/17). There were six competitions in NACES, namely Technical Case Study Competition, Plant Design Competition, Technical Essay Writing, Technical Power Point Presentation, Technical Debate Competition, and Technical Video Competition. ITB students brought home five titles, namely the first and third winner of Plant Design Competition, first winner of Technical Case Study, first winner of Technical Power Point Presentation, and third winner of Technical Essay Writing. This result affirms ITB as the Grand Champion, a title given to University with the most titles won.

Competed fields in NACES are relating to Chemical Engineering. For example, in Technical Power Point Presentation, participants were urged to present ideas or innovations to solve problems relating to Chemical Engineering. In this competition, ITB delegation discussed common problems that confront tofu industry in Indonesia. Indonesia’s relatively massive tofu consumption could generate comparable waste, both solid and liquid. The waste is usually discharged irresponsibly and thus contaminate the environment. Hence, ITB students offered a solution to process tofu waste into flour or fodders which are rich in protein and fiber. Their work brought the team to be the first winner of Technical Power Point Presentation.

According to a team member that won Technical Power Point Presentation, Devina Regina (Chemical engineering 2014), all ITB delegations have prepared for the competition since long. The preparation began with internal selection done since June. The internal selection was intended to determine which team to represent ITB in NACES. Then, the selected delegations have to prepare from August to October 2017. During that time, every team finalize the concept and material, do presentation drill, and also ask questions and give suggestions to other teams.

Even though the preparation was not easy, Devina said that all team members do not wane and keep trying their best. This fighting spirit brought the delegations to defend the title. Devina also felt happy and proud because she could bring ITB’s and Indonesia’s name to International event. “I feel happy and proud because I can go and raise the flag of Indonesia in foreign country through this competition”, she said.
