BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – An international achievement was earned by three students of Institut Teknologi Bandung named Teresia Rosa Savera, Joshua Gunawan, and Yashael Faith Arthanto. They earned the achievement from LSI Design Contest held on 8th March 2019 at University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. Those students come from Electrical Engineering Study Program in School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of ITB class of 2015.

LSI (Large Scale Integrated) Design Competition is an annual competition which is participated regularly by students of Electrical Engineering as a pre-requirement for VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration). In VLSI, students have to design a chip in general and make a report, which will be submitted for LSI Design Contest selection. When making the report, students are mentored by Prof. Trio Adiono ST, MT, Ph.D as the lecturer of VLSI.

This year, LSI Design Contest carried about Deep Learning. There were more than 100 participants, coming not only from Japan as the host, but also Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam, and other countries in Asia.

Teresia, one of the team member, explained about the phases that they have to go through before reaching Okinawa. First, the team have to make a report on the chip design that will be used for Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology as the application of deep learning.

“From ITB there were actually three teams that submit the paper on the first selection of LSI Design Contest. However, only our team got invited to Okinawa. Before we go, we have to rewrite the paper in a shorter version and also make its presentation slides,” she said.

Every team that was invited to Okinawa got a reward in different category. The team from ITB, the only team from Indonesia, got 1st runner up and beat teams from Vietnam, Thailand, and other countries in Asia.

According to Yashael, the team from ITB surpassed teams from other countries because they make a design potential for direct application in AI technology. “We are really grateful to get the 1st runner up and represented ITB and Indonesia in international competition. We would never make it here without the help of many. We would like to thank Alumni of Electrical Engineering of ITB, Endowment Fund of ITB, and of course STEI ITB that have greatly supported us,” he said.

They give a message to other students to not to be afraid of trying, icluding in participating in a competition. “As a student, do not be afraid to dream high. Do not be afraid of failing because we once dreamt to make achievement in international level and it is now a reality,” said Yashael.
