BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Telecommunication Engineering Research Group (KK) of the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SEEI ITB), conducted a Community Service on Training in the Design of Automated Digital Security and Surveillance System at RT 07 RW 19, Sadang Serang Village, Bandung, on Thursday (24/10/2024).

A lecturer from STEI ITB’s Telecommunication Engineering Research Group, Hamonangan Situmorang, S.T., M.T., shared that the community service focused on applying artificial intelligence (AI) technology for enhanced security systems.

According to him, this initiative serves as a starting point to support the development of technologies integral to daily life, aligned with the transition from the Industrial Era 4.0 to 5.0, where AI plays a pivotal role.

“The primary agenda for this activity was introducing a CCTV-based security system as an initial step. Although our long-term vision includes building smart city and smart village concepts, we chose to start with a solution that directly benefits local residents, particularly by enhancing environmental security," he explained.

The CCTV system presented goes beyond basic recording functions. Future implementations will use AI to issue early warnings about potential security threats, such as detecting suspicious movements that might indicate criminal intent.

During the event, Hamonangan Situmorang and his team trained the local community on installing and operating CCTV in their neighborhood.
The choice of Sadang Serang Village was also personally significant to Situmorang. Not only is it near geographically, but also because it has an emotional bond with him. "I grew up here, so I feel a strong connection and sense of duty to contribute positively to the community that knows me well," he said.

Residents warmly received the technology-based security system training, especially given past criminal incidents in the area, which underscored the need for improved security measures.

SEEI ITB students was conducting training session to the community of RT 07 RW 19, Sadang Serang Village, Bandung.

"At this stage, the training equips residents to independently operate the system, starting from camera installation to the entire system management," he added.

This AI-based security system differs fundamentally from conventional systems. Unlike conventional systems that offer only forensic data after an incident, this new approach provides preventive measures, proactively analyzing data to issue early warnings to relevant parties when potential threats are detected.

In the future, this system aims to integrate more broadly, including potential collaboration with local law enforcement, to foster a safer and more intelligent environment. While current efforts focus on environmental security, the broader objective is to apply AI technology to address wider community needs, supported by data centers and big data.

Ultimately, this community service activity is not merely about technologies. It aims to empower residents through training and collaboration in creating a safer, smarter community environment.
