Prof. Djoko Santoso, a Professor at Geophysical Engineering at ITB was honored with this title for his contributions to engineering and education in Indonesia.

During his career journey, he has held numerous positions and received numerous awards. Approximately for 40 years, Prof. Djoko Santoso has been actively involved at ITB, contributing to the nation. His roles include serving as the Head of the Indonesian Rectorates Forum from 2008 to 2010, Head of the Indonesian Higher Education Council from 2008 to 2010, Active Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysics, Active Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and participating in various other national and international organizations.

In addition, he has held various roles and positions, including serving as the Rector of ITB from 2005 to 2010, Rector of UI from 2012 to 2013, Director General of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Culture from 2010 to 2014, Vice Chair of ITB’s Board of Trustees, Head of the Academic Senate ITB from 2002 to 2005, Head of the ITB Geophysical Engineering Study Program from 1989 to 1997, Head of the Engineering Team at the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, and many other positions he has held.

Various awards from educational institutions and even foreign governments have been given to Prof. Djoko Santoso, such as Asean Institute of Technology Thailand, National United University Taiwan, and The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon from the Japanese Government. These awards recognize his contribution in increasing the academic and educational exchanges between Japan and Indonesia like holding the first Japan-Indonesia Rectorate Conference in November 2012 and sending Indonesian lecturers to Japan on Indonesian government scholarships.

During the event, he delivered a speech titled “ Expanding the Important Role of Geophysical Engineers for Sustainability”. He mentioned that Indonesia is currently faced with the need to reduce carbon dioxide gas emissions due to its dependence on fossil energy. “Our challenge in the future, apart from ensuring prosperity and meeting energy resources, is that we must realize Indonesia’s position as a net zero emissions country,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of implementing Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) or Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology to reduce carbon emissions in various products. CCS and CCUS technology are predicted to be able to reduce CO2 by 19.61% in 2070 based on the IEA 2023.

At the end of his speech, Prof. Djoko Santoso said that the role of Geophysical Engineering keeps expanding to promote welfare by balancing energy demands and environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions using CCS/CCUS technology.
