Total Summer School 2013 : Expand the Horizon in Petroleum Industry

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - As a dedicated ITB student, there can not be any time wasted. Holiday season was also used to explore new knowledge and new experience. Among various ways, enrolling in a summer school program was one of the favourites. Total Summer school (TSS) was namely the the most anticipated program for ITB students. From Sunday-Friday (30/06-05/07/13) five of ITB students from multiple major had the chance to feel the Eiffel town's atmosphere and to learn about new things and experince in the city.
TSS 2013 was a routine program held by Total, one of the biggest petroleum company in the world. TSS is a one-week program located in Paris, the hometown of this company. The goal is to provide an overview of the strategy and management issues that a major international energy company faces, open a window to the working world-enrolment in the Summer School can be combined with internships at Total, and foster the awareness on the wealth of international & cultural diversity. On this program, there are four key issues to be addressed. They were economic outlook, future energy, environment, and corporate social responsibility.

This year, TSS was participated by 120 students from all over the world. Among them, there were six indonesian students. Three of them were from Ganesha, they are Ratna Laras Cantika  (Geophysics Engineering 2010), Michael Ari Dhanto (Petroleum Engineering 2009),dan  Rahmadani Dian Pratiwi (Industry Management Engineering 2009). Apart form those three students, there are two others who were the champion of Total Genius Campus who has given the chance to also follow this TSS program. The champions are Muhsin Seif Lahmadi and Meidy Saputra Amin (Geophysics Engineering).

For a week, the participants followed an interative methods to understands completely about Total company. They learn about its company values and how the people works inside the company. From focus group discussion, cabaret show, and interactive chit-chat with Total's staff and top management, all of the above were a part of the program. No wonder, the participants gain a lot of experience when they got back to Indonesia.

"... their (Total) work culture and views were different from the majority of our local companies. Me myself is going to jump in this industry soon, I hope that I can contribute and make a change," said Michael one of the participants from ITB. He recounted that a good company must not only think about the lucrative side of the business, but also how the company can contribute to the development and the betterment in the country where they operate. "I received more than I expected. Apart form knowing that every nation has its own needs of energy, I learn about how big company works and operates," said Cantika.

These new perspectives and experinces had become student potential to build ideas to develop Indonesia. Hopefully these knowledge become a fuel to burn their spirit for building a better Indonesia.
