KUALA LUMPUR, itb.ac.id – Collin Sheima Budin, a 2022 Geophysical Engineering student at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), was selected as a Student Delegate for the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) 2025 through the Energy Education University Student Program.

This prestigious event, held from February 18-20, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, featured only 50 top students from 16 countries and 39 educational institutions. As a representative of Indonesia, Collin had the valuable opportunity to interact directly with energy industry leaders, explore various cutting-edge technological innovations, and expand her network with multinational companies in the energy sector.

The International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) is the largest multidisciplinary technical conference focusing on the latest technological advancements, best practices, and strategic discussions in the global energy industry.

Held annually, IPTC 2025 adopts the theme "Energy for All: Reflect, Innovate, Evolve," emphasizing the importance of innovation and collaboration in ensuring sustainable energy access. With the support of four leading industry organizations—American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)—IPTC serves as a strategic platform for professionals, academics, and students to discuss innovations and challenges in the energy sector.

Although the selection process for IPTC consisted of only one stage, it remained highly competitive, requiring participants to submit a short essay and a motivation video as part of the evaluation. Collin expressed that her motivation to take on new challenges, gain experience at an international conference, and expand her network with various global energy companies were key drivers behind her participation. Her involvement represented the enthusiasm of Indonesian students in making an impact on the international stage.

During IPTC 2025, Collin engaged in various activities that provided her with valuable insights and experiences. The conference created opportunities for her to network with industry leaders, including SEG President John Eastwood, and explore award-winning innovative projects by ENI and Aramco.

One of the most memorable sessions for her was the CEO Dialogues themed "Energy for All," which discussed challenges and innovations in the energy sector. Additionally, she participated in professional development workshops, such as CV writing training and job interview simulations, and collaborated on a group project presentation with delegates from diverse academic backgrounds.

A particularly memorable moment for Collin was sharing a room with a delegate from India. "She was beautiful and intelligent—we got along well as roommates. On our last night in Kuala Lumpur, we even exchanged money as a keepsake," she shared.

This experience highlights that IPTC is not just an event for academic and professional growth but also a space for cultural exchange and international friendships.

Beyond the invaluable experiences, Collin acknowledged facing challenges, particularly in terms of the language barrier. Since all sessions were conducted in English, she had to quickly adapt to communicate effectively with other participants. However, this challenge became an opportunity for her to boost her confidence in speaking and understanding English, especially in professional settings.

Concluding her journey at IPTC 2025, Collin hopes that more Indonesian students, especially from ITB, will have the courage to take bold steps and explore opportunities like IPTC. “Shoot your shot! Don’t be afraid—just go for it,” she encouraged other students aspiring to become delegates at global forums.
