FMNS ITB Holds Guest Lecture, Welcoming Prof. Dr. Marc J. E. C. van der Maarel from the University of Groningen, Netherlands

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Biochemistry and Biomolecular Engineering Research Group, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung (FMNS ITB) held a guest lecture with Prof. Dr. Marc J. E. C. van der Maarel from University of Groningen, The Netherlands, on Monday (15/01/2024).
The guest lecture took place in Dalton Room FMNS ITB and attended by lecturers, undergraduate to postgraduate students from Chemistry Study Program FMNS ITB, as well as several guests from outside ITB.
Prof. van der Maarel delivered a lecture entitled "The Diversity of Glycoside Hydrolase Family 57 Glycogen Branching Enzymes". In his presentation, he explained the structure, catalysis mechanism, and diversity of glycoside bond hydrolyzing enzymes, especially glycoside bonds in glycogen compounds and their derivatives.
After the guest lecture, Prof. van der Maarel visited the FMNS ITB Building and was welcomed by the Dean of FMNS ITB as well as the chairman and staff of the Biochemistry and Biomolecular Engineering Research Group.
Besides actively researching and developing start-ups in the field of carbohydrate-based products, Prof. Dr. van der Maarel is the Director of the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen, Netherlands.
This guest lecture is expected to be a good initiation to organizing various international collaborations, especially visiting professors at FMNS ITB and joint research projects.
Prior to this event, Prof. van der Maarel had also visited ITB campus as a speaker for The Gruber-Soedigdo Lecture (GSL), a regular scientific meeting organized by the Biochemistry and Biomolecular Engineering Research Group of FMNS ITB.
