BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), through its School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI) inaugurated the IC Design Center on Friday (4/8/2023), located in the ITB Research and Innovation Building, 4th Floor.
IC Design Center (Integrated Circuit Design) is an IC Design semiconductor center, as well as an interconnected platform to carry out agreed specific functions.
SEEI ITB’s Full Professor, Prof. Trio Adiono S.T., M.T., Ph.D., remarked how activities revolving around IC design have grown to become relevant. Moreover, looking at today’s work culture, technology has become an unavoidable aspect.
“Actually, activities in the IC design field have been increasing, each day. This is a moment filled with excited spirits, driven to create more intriguing environments,” he expressed.
He shared about the big idea behind IC Design Center’s launch, one of them being geopolitical conflict such as the competition between China and the US, the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. With all of the above global changes, automatically, demand for digital devices has risen exponentially.
This is no exception for IC design, which functions on executing specific operations through assembling connected circuit elements.
He declared the ITB Design Center as an ecosystem to further improve digital devices’ utility value. “Our focus here gravitates towards human resources in the chip design field, which produces microchips, the brain of digital products. There are various chips and finished products, such as medical, infrastructure, and ICT products. We are also responsible to fulfill the needs of those fields.
His group has conducted various surveys and visits to developed countries for study banding purposes in the field of semiconductor. The use of semiconductor devices has evidently created a large-scale impact for global industries.
Some countries that the team has visited include Belgium, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore.
"We can’t possibly invent this advanced technology by ourselves. In this technology, there exists a supply chain. Someone does the research, someone else will do the manufacturing, then market it globally, etcetera. We exist as an industry that absorbs technology as well,” he expressed.
ITB IC Design Center’s inauguration was also attended by the Rector of ITB, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D., as well as the Vice Rector for Finance, Planning, and Development, Prof. Ir. Muhamad Abduh, M.T., Ph.D.
Prof. Reini also appreciated the presence of this new system in the field of semiconductor, especially IC design. She hoped this moment will revolutionize technology use, especially in the semiconductor field. “Let alone in this digital era, hopefully more human resources from ITB could compete globally in this field,” she aspired.
