BANDUNG, ITB.ac.id – Began from exploring new ideas during their first year, Sadira Auliyannisak (17019035) and Jasmine Victoria (17519044) managed to win the first place at Wardah Art Ideation Contest 2023.

The event was an art installation design competition with Wardah lipsticks as its base material. Wardah Art Ideation Contest 2023, which took upon a "Beauty Moves You" theme, aimed to create art installations to reflect women's various potentials and abilities.

From that theme, Jasmine got inspiration from a queen in the chess game. According to her, the queen represents a woman with complete control over her direction and goals in life.

Sadira then developed that idea into an art product. She explored the top view of the queen in a chess game inspired by her favorite artist, Richard Serra.

"Most people consider the king as the key in a chess game. That is true. However, the one who can move freely is the queen, she has the power to do anything, and the queen is the one who controls the game," said Jasmine.

The idea's layout was made into a series of wall art composed of lipstick packaging and titled "Meeting Yourself." The wall installation, which has a dimension of 3,5m x 4,2m x 3m, was textured like a layer of bricks using abstract art with a center-directional spiral structure.

This installation is complemented by a series of flower-shaped lipstick packaging stuck on the walls. From the bud-shape, half-bloomed, to full bloom in the middle of the art installation.

The installation walls that are arranged up and down depict the dynamics of a woman's life in finding her identity. The spiral arrangement between the walls emphasizes the winding road a woman must traverse to find her true identity.

The last touch is a flower transformation from a bud into a full bloom that philosophically represents a woman's transformation into the best version of herself.

"Along the journey, visitors are accompanied by flowers which began from their earliest stage. When they reach the midpoint, they then meet a full-bloomed flower. It means that they have managed to find their true self after traversing the winding road, represented by the spiral design," said Sadira.

In creating this design, they faced various challenges, from exploration to the 3D production stage. Their different study program backgrounds pushed them to complement each other.

Jasmine, who came from Design Product, is more oriented toward creating an ergonomic technical solution. At the same time, Sadira, with her Visual Arts background, is more oriented to exploring new ideas and concepts that are related to self-expression.

Sadira then explained that not all of her ideas could be implemented technically. Therefore, collaboration and compromise from both of them are crucial to the success of this project. "Jasmine's part is the reality, while my part is expectation and crazy ideas," concluded Sadira.
