BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – In the academic year of 2022/2023, ITB welcomed 58 international students to study in their chosen major. The reporters of ITB Public Relations had the opportunity to interview two of these students on Monday (15/08/2022) about their impressions and thoughts on ITB in general, as well as the city of Bandung as the place to seek education.
During the interview, buddies (ITB students who are interested in international exposure and are tasked to be the bridge between regular and international students) teach these students about the cultures and norms of Bandung City, to which they show great interest and excitement. One of the international students from Denmark, Mikkel, described his first impression of Bandung upon entering as the friendly and humble locals, narrow roads, and the no-tipping custom found nearly everywhere.
Despite being enrolled in SBM for one semester, Mikkel was also interested in studying engineering. “To be honest, I do not have many expectations of studying in ITB, but I know for one thing that it will be fun. I also want to study engineering to explore more about my studies.”
Another international student from Yaman, Abdullah, decided to study architecture at ITB because he was fascinated with the designs of buildings in Bandung. As a recipient of DCPS (Developing Country Partnership Scholarship), he hoped to join several competitions and teach younger students throughout his stay in Bandung. He also mentioned he would like to continue his master’s study in the Urban and Regional Planning program after graduating.
“Bandung is colder and greener compared to my country, and its architecture is more striking,” Abdullah said. “Although the academic officers here are quite strict, ITB is a great place to learn. I want to explore more about architecture here.”
ITB students who wish to accompany international students like Mikkel and Abdullah can register themselves as buddies. As part of IMSC (International Mobilities Student Club) under the supervision of ITB IRO, the buddies community was formed to communicate with international students and assist them in ITB.
“IMSC is a club for students who wish for international exposure. We are tasked to help international students who are studying in ITB. The last two years of communicating with these students are mostly done online. Hence, this year is the first time we interact with them in person,” Aurel, a pharmaceutical science and technology student who is also the president of IMSC, stated while promoting the activities done by IMSC. Those who are interested in becoming members and buddies can register and read more information on the following Instagram account: @imscitb.
