BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—Fatih Nararya Rashadyfa Ilhamsyah, a student of Informatics Engineering at ITB, achieved significant success at the Model United Nations (MUN) event, specifically the Singapore Model United Nations (SMUN) 2023. Fatih, representing the United Kingdom, achieved success by receiving a Verbal Commendation in the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) council.
Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation that recreates the processes of the United Nations in order to address global problems and find solutions. Model United Nations (MUN) simulations encompass negotiations, discussions, and intense debates, mirroring the proceedings of the United Nations (UN). The objective of Model United Nations (MUN) is to provide students with education on current events, international relations, diplomacy, and the agenda of the United Nations. Engaging in Model United Nations (MUN) enables participants to enhance their abilities in various areas such as public speaking, presentation, persuasion, situational analysis, research, and critical thinking.
During the SMUN event, participants, also known as delegates, were assigned to different simulated councils or agencies. The SMUN conference included 11 councils, each representing a distinct institution or organization.
Fatih was assigned to the UNEA council in SMUN 2023. The UNEA council is responsible for global environmental decision-making and policies. The decisions and resolutions made by member states of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) have a significant impact on the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in its efforts to create a healthier environment that supports diplomacy for future generations.
Fatih, as one of the six delegates representing the Ganesha Model United Nations Club (GMUN), demonstrated outstanding dedication and readiness. He stated that a crucial factor in assessing a delegate is the quality of their speech or solutions presented at the conference. The speeches or solutions should be substantial and backed by factual information, rather than superficial remarks.
Additionally, Fatih mentioned that he conducted extensive research on the topics discussed at UNEA. He mentioned that he read around 24 executive summaries of documents and resolutions released by UNEP and UNEA, along with ICJ legal cases related to the topic. He also stated that he brought all of his research documents to Singapore, which weighed approximately 6 kg.
Achievement in Best Position Paper
The success did not stop there. Fatih was an award for the Best Position Paper in the World Trade Organisation council at the President International Model United Nations. This is the evaluation outcome of a previous SMUN event that he participated in.
"Because during SMUN, I was rushing to finish my Position Paper, which eventually turned out poorly. This time, I genuinely worked on my Position Paper with the intention of receiving the BPP award," he explained.
Fatih dedicated time and effort to create a high-quality position paper. He sought assistance from acquaintances who had previously received Best Position Paper awards in Model United Nations conferences. He requested three people to review and make corrections to his position paper before submitting it. He received the award for Best Position Paper due to his diligent efforts. "The most important thing was to start working on the position paper 7 days before the deadline," he concluded.Fatih dedicated time and effort to create a high-quality position paper. Fatih's accomplishments as Verbal Commendation in the UNEA council of SMUN 2023 and the Best Position Paper award in the World Trade Organisation council at the President International MUN show his diplomatic skills, strong analytical abilities, deep knowledge, and effective communication skills.
