BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—The Indonesian government is focusing heavily on knowledge-based economic development and innovation in the digital era. Blockchain is one of the newer innovations that has drawn the interest of the industry, particularly the port industry. In this regard, Indonesia Port Corp (IPC) hosted a webinar titled "Blockchain for Port Industry" on Thursday (3/6/2021).
The webinar featured five speakers, including representative from the Republic of Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency, Prof. Ismunandar; Assistant Deputy for Technology and Information at the Ministry of State Owned Enterprises, Imam Bustomi; Chairman of the Indonesian Blockchain Association, Oham Dunggio; Co-founder and Director of Blocksphere & Indonesian Blockchain Network, Gilang Bhagaskara; and ITB Rector, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D. Prof. Reini also invited two ITB lecturers, Dr.-Ing. Eueung Mulyana and Budi Raharjo, Ph.D., to explain about blockchain in general and some of the ITB's blockchain research.
The representative from the Republic of Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency, Prof. Ismunandar spoke about "Applicative Research Strategies Based on Ecosystem Collaboration" and followed by the presentation of "Visions of Learning, Research, and Innovation to Build Excellence in SOEs" by Imam Bustomi, Assistant Deputy for Technology and Information at the Ministry of State Owned Enterprises.
The speakers in session 1 covered two subjects that both stressed the importance of research and innovation in achieving Indonesia 2045. Indonesia's infrastructure strategy for 2045, according to Prof. Ismunandar, is to become a world-class creative digital economic center. This is also a priority for SOEs, who are investing heavily in business and technology leadership.
"It's not impossible; the planned strategy for 2045 can be realized if the triple helix (industry, government, and academia) can collaborate effectively, supported by media and technology, to create a penta helix that is expected to be naturally downstream using research results and innovations in society and industry," he said.
ITB Rector, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D. together with Dr.-Ing. Eueung Mulyana explained about “Emerging Blockchain Research” as well as examples of ITB's blockchain research. Prof. Reini stated, "We are willing to work together and participate in blockchain development in the port industry."
Dr. Eueung said in his presentation that emerging blockchain research comprises both basic and application research. Blockchain research has also begun to be multidisciplinary, allowing it to be viewed from multiple angles. "Blockchain often appears in the eyes of research and industry," he stated.
Blockchain applications have been established at ITB in a variety of fields, including e-voting with multiple consensus algorithm methods, e-government implementations like land registration, monitoring the use of BOS funds, and health insurance claims. Food tracking can also be done using blockchain technology.
