BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Students from the Architecture Program, School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SAPPD ITB), Yuni Ariefah and Erensa Ratu Chelsia, won third place during the recent Raflesia National Architecture Competition (Indonesia Selective Solar House) that was held from October 25, 2023 to January 16, 2024.

Under the supervision of Dr. Eng. Mochamad Donny Koerniawan, S.T., M.T., Yuni and Erensa came up with a design entitled ‘Lumina Haus' which is set to emphasize on the current urbanization phenomena that are happening within urban areas.

The massive volume of urbanization that occurs today follows various micro problems, such as land cover change, poorly designed buildings, as well as thermal discomfort, which often leads to more problems in a wider area range, including urban heat islands and global warming. Lumina Haus was seen as a solution for the impact of urbanization by raising the basic concepts of energy efficiency, environmental conservation, and economic sustainability with its very own strategies.

Some of these strategies include the use of solar reflective paint to resist the absorption of excess heat into buildings, the use of efficient air conditioning and natural lighting systems, the use of rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic panels, cheap materials and fast construction options, as well as urban farming and growing house concepts.

As a supervisor, Dr. Donny contributed to the brainstorming process of the competition, ranging from topics research on urban heat islands, developing floor plans, material research, software analysis, and other stages related to the construction of Lumina Haus. The concluding concept was then excavated by making a three-dimensional model for the poster layouting and rendering process.

Yuni explained, during the design process of Lumina Haus, she and her colleague struggled most in calculating the Draft Budget from the design materials made, since both of them have not had any project management lectures. In addition to that, many revisions were also made to adjust the location of the actual project that require coordination with different parties involved.

However, despite the difficulties, Lumina Haus won third place in the competition and will soon be implemented in Indonesia. This is truly an achievement for both Yuni and Erensa, as well as ITB.
