JAYAPURA, itb.ac.id — The Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Patriot Expedition Team (TEP), through its Health Cluster, is working to improve health literacy and access to health information among communities in the Lereh Transmigration Area, Jayapura Regency, Papua. As part of this initiative, the team conducted a health education session and introduced Lerehfarma.id, a local health information platform, at the Purnawajati Village Hall, Yapsi District, on Saturday (September 26, 2026).

The event brought together residents of Purnawajati and Tabbeyan villages, including healthcare workers, community health volunteers, youth organization representatives, and members of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK). In addition to raising awareness of disease prevention and sanitation, the event provided an opportunity for residents and healthcare workers to discuss various challenges and needs related to local healthcare services.

Lerehfarma.id Makes Health Information More Accessible

Cindy Avici Hutauruk, S.Farm., a member of the ITB Patriot Expedition Team's Health Cluster, presented the team's survey results and field findings from several healthcare service areas in Yapsi District. These findings served as a basis for assessing local health conditions, identifying community needs, and developing collaborative responses.

One of the initiatives developed by the team is Lerehfarma.id, a digital platform that provides information on healthcare services and facilities, medicine availability, disease education, health data, and a channel for public complaints and feedback.

Participants not only received an introduction to the platform but also took part in hands-on sessions to learn how to access and use its various features.

The platform received positive feedback from local healthcare workers. One of them, Nurse Sinta, highlighted how information on medicine availability could help residents avoid unnecessary trips to healthcare facilities.

"Thank you for developing the Lerehfarma website. If a medicine is out of stock, residents can find out immediately without having to travel all the way to the auxiliary health center," she said.

Discussions during the event also highlighted several challenges in healthcare delivery, particularly medicine availability at auxiliary community health centers (Puskesmas Pembantu or Pustu). Feedback from residents and healthcare workers will serve as valuable input for the continued development of Lerehfarma.id, including improvements to its information services and public complaint mechanisms.

Health Education on Disease Prevention and Water Sanitation

In addition to promoting digital health technology, the ITB Patriot Expedition Team provided education on diseases of particular concern to local communities, including malaria, acute respiratory infections (ARI), and scabies.

Ranip Fahmi, a member of the team's Health Cluster, explained the diseases, preventive measures, and the importance of accessing and using reliable health information. Participants, particularly community health volunteers, healthcare workers, youth organization representatives, and PKK members, were also encouraged to share the knowledge they gained with their families and surrounding communities.

Local health volunteers also shared their experiences in malaria prevention and control. Loes Lukma, a malaria volunteer from Tabbeyan Village, explained that volunteers conduct door-to-door visits to support malaria prevention and management efforts.

Meanwhile, Suharti, a malaria volunteer from SP 6, reminded residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites by using mosquito nets, applying mosquito repellent, and wearing long-sleeved clothing, particularly in the late afternoon.

The team also addressed issues related to clean water and sanitation. Participants received basic training on assessing water conditions using universal pH indicators. This activity was particularly relevant to the team's field findings regarding limited water sources in several areas of Yapsi District.

During an examination of a rainwater collection source used by local residents, the team recorded a pH level of 5. This finding served as an educational example to emphasize the importance of monitoring water quality and protecting the environment from potential sources of contamination.

Promoting Sustainable Community Health Education

The ITB Patriot Expedition Team's Health Cluster also provided educational posters to be displayed at auxiliary health centers. These materials are intended to support healthcare workers and community health volunteers in sharing information about disease prevention with local residents.

The Head of Tabbeyan Village expressed appreciation for the initiative and hoped that the health education activities would continue through collaboration between the village administration and community health volunteers.

"This afternoon's activity has been very positive, and we are grateful for it. The village administration and community health volunteers are now working together to ensure that the knowledge and training provided can continue to reach local residents," he said.

Through this initiative, the ITB Patriot Expedition Team's Health Cluster seeks to integrate health education, community participation, the involvement of healthcare workers and volunteers, and the use of digital technology. Lerehfarma.id is expected to undergo further development as a local health information platform, helping residents more easily access information about healthcare services, medicine availability, diseases, and preventive health measures.
