This event invited Dr. Muhamad Fahmi Hasan, S.Pd., M.Or., a lecturer from the Sports Science Research Group at SP ITB and an advocate for sports and health literacy at ITB, as the guest speaker.
This event, held in preparation for the month of Ramadan, discussed exercising while fasting. Physical activity can still be done during fasting by adjusting to the body's condition. The exercises performed while fasting should be the usual ones. For beginners, it is recommended to start with light exercises such as walking. "Just do what you can for beginners. Ideally, that's the approach, whether you like it or not, fasting affects the body's condition," said Dr. Fahmi.
The best time to exercise during fasting varies depending on the body's condition. Dr. Fahmi recommended the optimal times for exercising while fasting to be one hour before iftar, after iftar until before Isha, and after Tarawih prayers.
Types of exercises before iftar, such as running or yoga, help prevent prolonged dehydration. Meanwhile, exercising after Tarawih prayers is possible but should be done no later than two hours before bedtime. This is because the body needs 2-3 hours to return to a relaxed state, ensuring a comfortable and high-quality sleep.
Some exercise recommendations during fasting include choosing workouts that match your body’s characteristics, health history, and personality. Additionally, avoid comparing your pace with others and just focus on your own capabilities. The key to successful exercise is consistency while respecting your own limits.
Dr. Fahmi emphasized that fasting should not be an obstacle to exercising. “We all know that exercise is good for our health. It doesn’t always have to be about jogging or push-ups. We can make the most of what’s around us; a chair can be used for stretching. Fasting should not be an excuse to stop exercising.”
With this event, it is hoped that it can become a discussion space between the School of Pharmacy and other schools/faculties.
"It is hoped that we can collaborate more with other faculties and schools. Here, we want to share ideas and have casual yet meaningful discussions. At the same time, we also want to introduce Pojok Herbal. We have products from the School of Pharmacy's research that we are trying to market, including jamu, herbal tea, as well as several supplements and herbal medicines that we have developed from our research," said apt. Yangie Dwi, Ph.D., as the moderator.
