JAKARTA, itb.ac.id – Prof. Brian Yuliarto, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer and researcher in Engineering Physics, Faculty of Industrial Technology (FIT), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), received the prestigious Habibie Prize 2024 in the Engineering category. The award was presented during the Habibie Prize 2024 Outstanding Talent Award and Indonesia Innovation Ecosystem Talk, held at B.J. Habibie Building, Thamrin, Jakarta, on Monday (11/11/2024).
The Habibie Prize is a prestigious award established to honor B.J. Habibie, a visionary figure in science and technology in Indonesia. Presented annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology, the Habibie Prize aims to encourage innovation and strengthen Indonesia's research ecosystem, in line with B.J. Habibie's vision of developing exceptional and innovative human resources.
Prof. Brian Yuliarto's Contributions in Nanomaterial Engineering
Prof. Brian Yuliarto has been with ITB since 2006 and is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FIT). His work in academia and research focuses on developing nanomaterials for sensor and energy applications. His research aims to enhance sensor capabilities, expected to perform with higher accuracy and speed in detecting various target molecules.
Some breakthroughs by Prof. Brian and his team include developing sensors for hazardous gasses, pollutants, and diagnostics for diseases like dengue, hepatitis, cancer, and various pathogenic bacteria that threaten human health. Through his developed nanoporous engineering, the sensors capture more target molecules, making them more sensitive and high-performing.
Prof. Brian's research collaborations extend internationally. Currently, he has published 329 scientific articles indexed in Scopus, cited 5,618 times, with an h-index of 38. His innovative works have also been recognized with patents, providing intellectual property protection for research that could be developed into industrial products.
One of his focuses is creating technological independence in biosensors for medical needs. Several industry collaborations have been established to develop disease diagnostic tools. This way, Indonesia is expected not only to achieve independence in biosensor technology but also to contribute to global healthcare technology.
Building a World-Class Laboratory
Prof. Brian's dedication to research is also evident in his efforts to build an international-standard laboratory at ITB. Together with lecturers and researchers from ITB, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and several other universities in Indonesia, he has created a research environment that attracts many postgraduate students. His collaborations with scientists worldwide have enhanced the competitiveness of this laboratory, now on par with other top global laboratories.
With the achievement of the Habibie Prize 2024, Prof. Brian Yuliarto is expected to continue advancing science and technology in Indonesia and inspire the younger generation to pursue innovation and research for the nation's progress.
