CIREBON, itb.ac.id – Two student organizations from ITB Cirebon Campus, the Urban and Regional Planning Student Association (HMP PL ITB Komisariat) and the Geophysics Engineering Student Organization, BSO HIMA TG “TERRA” ITB collaborated to conduct an environmental education program for students of SDN 1, 2, and 3 Cangkol. The activity specifically targeted 5th and 6th grade students with the aim of introducing waste management issues and the risks of tidal flooding through interactive and engaging learning methods.

The program began with an in-class educational session, where ITB students explained the basics of solid waste, its environmental impacts, and how improper waste disposal can worsen tidal flooding in coastal areas. Using visual media and open discussions, facilitators guided students to understand how simple actions such as throwing waste in the proper place can help prevent larger environmental problems. The students showed high enthusiasm during the session; many eagerly answered questions, shared their personal experiences, and demonstrated strong curiosity about the environmental issues presented.

In addition to the educational session, the program included a poster-making competition designed to reinforce the students’ understanding of the topics discussed. During the activity, students expressed their knowledge of waste management and tidal flooding creatively through drawings and colors. They appeared enthusiastic and imaginative as they colored and illustrated their posters..

Divided into small groups, they participated in a “clean-up challenge,” designed to cultivate environmental awareness while practicing waste collection and sorting. The atmosphere was lively, with students running enthusiastically, collaborating with teammates, and competing to become the quickest and most thorough group in cleaning the school area.

Through this collaboration, the organizers hope that students gain meaningful insights into the importance of keeping their surroundings clean and understanding how it relates to the risk of tidal flooding. “We hope this collaboration strengthens the relationship between student organizations, and that the volunteers who went to the field can truly see, hear, and feel the real conditions happening today. For the students of SDN Cangkol, we hope the lessons delivered can be understood and implemented in daily life, adding both knowledge and new experiences,” said Adifa Putri Ramadhani Zahra, event coordinator from HMP PL ITB Komisariat.
