PADANG, itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), through its Directorate of Community Service and Expertise Services (DPMK), organized a training program on digital chemistry education for teachers and students at SMAN 1 Padang, West Sumatra, on Friday (August 21, 2026). The program was part of ITB's efforts to support education recovery following floods and landslides while promoting more innovative and interactive science learning.

The training involved lecturers and students from the Chemistry Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) ITB, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). A total of 30 high school students from several schools and 52 teachers affiliated with the Chemistry Subject Teachers Association (MGMP), representing 20 high schools across Padang, participated in the program.

The floods and landslides, which damaged educational infrastructure, have posed significant challenges to science education, particularly chemistry, which requires laboratory facilities, chemicals, and specialized equipment. To address these challenges, ITB introduced computational technology as an alternative learning approach that offers greater flexibility and accessibility.

During the training, participants were introduced to Avogadro and ChemSketch software to visualize molecular structures, understand chemical bonds, and explore various chemistry concepts digitally. These technologies enable students to study independently, both at school and at home.

Meanwhile, teachers received training in developing practical, computation-based learning modules and strengthening their understanding of scientific concepts. This approach is expected to enrich teaching methods, improve digital literacy, and bridge chemistry education at the secondary school and university levels.

The program coordinator and speaker, Dr. Muhammad Yudhistira Azis, M.Si., a lecturer from the Analytical Chemistry Research Group at FMIPA ITB, explained that the training was a continuation of ITB's efforts to assist communities beyond the emergency disaster response phase.

"The digitalization of learning can serve as an alternative way to create a more interactive and enjoyable chemistry learning experience while helping restore students' motivation following the disaster," he said.

He added that the program also provided an opportunity for lecturers and teachers to exchange knowledge and discuss challenges in science education at schools.

"Through these discussions, I hope we can develop teaching methods that are more relevant to students' needs," he stated.

Head of the Regional II Branch of the West Sumatra Education Office, Budi Hermawan, S.Pd., M.Si., expressed his appreciation for ITB's contribution to improving the competencies of teachers and students. He hoped that collaboration among academics would continue and encourage further innovation in chemistry education.

Similar appreciation was expressed by the Head of the Padang City Chemistry Subject Teachers Association (MGMP), Jhon Hendri, M.Pd. According to him, the training provided teachers with new insights into applying scientific concepts in more practical and targeted ways.

In addition to the training sessions, the program featured an introduction to the Master's Program in Chemistry Teaching at FMIPA ITB and the presentation of Spektra 105, a book featuring inspiring stories of ITB Chemistry alumni.

Coordinated through DPMK ITB's post-disaster health, education, and psychosocial cluster for Sumatra, the initiative was part of ITB's 2026 Community Service Program. Its implementation received support from various stakeholders, including FMIPA ITB, UNP, the Chemistry Subject Teachers Association (MGMP), and the local Education Office.

Through this collaboration, ITB seeks to provide adaptive and sustainable learning solutions while strengthening the role of higher education institutions in supporting educational recovery in disaster-affected communities.
