FAD ITB Launches “Benda Museum” for Storing Artefact Data

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - ITB Faculty Arts and Design (FAD) Launches Benda Museum as a collection of artifacts for the record and preservation of everyday objects of Indonesians, both traditional and modern, on Wednesday (08/09/2021). Benda Museum is a platform for collecting artifacts in digital. Its existence is under the auspices of the Design Ethnography Lab, FSRD ITB.
The launching of Benda Museum was held through the webinar Dialog Design Vol. 11 with the theme “Seeking National Cultural Identity from Objects and Daily Innovations”, presenting 10 speakers from various backgrounds, including art, design, social, and culture. This event was held in three sessions, 90 minutes for each session.
The Dean of ITB FAD Dr. A. Rikrik Kusmara, M.Sn., said that Benda Museum was originally initiated by the Human and Industrial Product Design Research Group of ITB FAD in 2019. The main purpose of the Benda Museum was to digitize the collection and preservation (tangible aspects) as well as providing an understanding of the meaning and the cultural values contained in objects and the people who use them. He hopes that Benda Museum can encourage research and design development for the people of Indonesia.
The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also supports the event. Represented by Mego Pinandito, BRIN gave an introductory presentation at the beginning of the Benda Museum session. In his presentation, Mego said that BRIN is not only related to science and technology but also related to culture. As an initial step to realize technological developments, it is necessary to strengthen human resources through increasing the capabilities.
The first session, which was held at 10.00-11.15 WIB, discussed Daily Innovation. Then proceed to the second session at 13.00-14.20 WIB, discussing Design and Documentation. Benda Museum was closed in the third session at 15.00-16.30 by discussing Design and Culture. This event was a success, attended by 485 participants from various communities.
