BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – A feat is accomplished by students of Institut Teknologi Bandung. Garudago Team from Robotics Unit of ITB won Best Idea Award on Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Robot Contest 2019 (ABU Robocon 2019). The contest was organized by Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union on 25 August 2019 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Garudago was the team who won KRAI 2019 and hence represented Indonesia in the annual robot contest.
Manggala Adiputra or Angga (Mechanical Engineering 2016) as the leader of Garudago said that the concept raised in ABU Robocon 2019 is horsing and relay messaging, in line with the characteristic of Mongolia. Participants displayed their works such as wheeled robots and four-legged robots which will compete through hurdles while carrying messages.
“We have two robots, we call it Messenger Robot 1 and messenger Robot 2. MR1 is wheeled, while MR2 is legged,” said Angga.
He gave detail explanation about the robot’s working process. “Messenger Robot 1 will carry a message through a hurdle called forest, and then approach Messenger Robot 2 to pass the message. Messenger Robot 2 walk automatically, and then through mountain. At the same time, messenger Robot 1 have to throw a dice to a specific point, only then will messenger Robot 2 continue to go through mountain and lift the message high and hence receive absolute win,” explained Angga.
The plus point of these robots are their agility and reliability. The best time is 59 seconds to finish the mission. This becomes one of the plus point, hence Garudago Team is included in the best 8 teams. Out of 17 teams from 16 countries, the first winner get the best time of 33 seconds.

Angga feels happy with his team’s achievement. It is thanks to continuous work and support from other parties. Despite coming from different study programs, Garudago Team they work together well to achieve their shared dream.
During one year preparation to ready the robot to compete, 23 team members devoted their time and energy outside class hours to experiment with robots. They usually did it until late at night, and sometimes spent their weekends on the project. Some hurdles in the process did not stop the team to make any progress, and at the end they won “Best Idea Award”.
Angga hopes Haridago can help advance robotics in Indonesia and achieve better accomplishments. The achievement is a good beginning for Indonesia, and especially for ITB students which previously represent Indonesia on ABU Robocon in 2015. Angga also hopes to get support from all.
Ten representative of Garudago and two lecturers departed to Mongolia for the opportunity to look and learn about robots from other countries. Besides a contest, knowledge sharing was also held on ABU ROBOCON 2019. The 1st winner of the contest comes from Hong Kong, while Best Robot category was won by a team from China.
“Do not be afraid to dream, and do not forget to chase the dream. Do not give up,” Angga concluded.
