BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - After approximately 18 months of online studying at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) has opened a hybrid on-campus learning activity. The purpose of reopening the campus is to improve the academic atmosphere.

Starting the reopening of the campus, ITB organized Campur Tour 2021 as an introduction to the campus environment to TPB (Common Prepatory) students in the class of 2021. This activity involves 3,200 students held from November 8-26, 2021. As for the implementation, Campur Tour is divided per faculty to ITB Ganesha Campus and ITB Jatinangor Campus.

Rector of ITB, Prof. Reini Wirahadikusumah, Ph.D. said, the purpose of the Campus Tour event was to welcome the students at ITB Ganesha and Jatinangor Campuses. "We want all students to feel the academic atmosphere at ITB because the academic atmosphere of ITB is essential in supporting the success of students' learning," she said.

The Rector also revealed that the second semester of the Academic Year 2021/2022 ITB would start learning in a mixed manner. She reminded new students that it is necessary to adopt new habits to study on campus with the current conditions. One of the hopes is that all ITB academics can become health protocol ambassadors. "In the common interest, we must care about the people of ITB and also around us, and we protect ITB so that we can study and run the teaching and learning process effectively in this pandemic period," she said.

Introduction to practicum

One example from a series of Campus Tour activities is the introduction of the Basic Physics Practicum. Chief Coordinator of the Basic Physics Laboratory Assistant, Moch. Fakhrul Fauzi said that the purpose of introducing this Basic Physics practicum is to prepare new students in the class of 2021 for the implementation of offline practicums in the following semesters.

"In addition to the direction of the ITB executive, we expect that the new students who participate in this practicum simulation can experience how the situation of offline practicum in the ITB Basic Physics Laboratory (LFD). Hopefully, with this knowledge, they can better prepare themselves for practicum in the next semester because it is likely to be carried out offline," Fakhrul told ITB Public Relations Reporter during an interview on Wednesday (11/24/2021).

The event, designed under the direction of the Basic Physics Laboratory, is a practicum simulation activity of several physics modules that have been prepared in advance. The basic physics modules used are the basis of measurement and uncertainty, simple harmonic oscillations, mathematical pendulums, moments of inertia, young modulus, twist modulus, business and energy dynamics, momentum and collisions, and waves standing on ropes.

The direction is for 90 minutes, new students who participate in this activity will take and process data about the modules they get. After that, they will discuss to find a solution for the problem given in several groups.

A new student from the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (STEI) 2021, Kent Frumentius, one of the campus tour participants, said that the basic physics practicum activities provided were very interesting to engage. The explanations related to modules and data processing are very detailed, so it is straightforward to understand. "In my opinion, the implementation of campus tours in LFD has been going well. The reason is that from what I observed, the health protocols implemented are closely guarded, the practicum tools are completely provided, and I got a practicum assistant who is very clear in explaining the material so that I feel interested in following the practicum offline because it is interesting and, of course, exciting," he said when met on the sidelines of the activity.

Accompanied by students

Campus Tour ITB involves students as escorts. For example, in the School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPD), escorts come mostly from the class of 2019. New students seem very excited about doing this campus tour because not only it's their first time visiting the Ganesha campus, it is also the first time they met their friends who they had only known online.

Together with a companion, new students began to tour the campus, starting from SAPPD Building, GKUT, Lab. Physics, Lab. Chemistry, Library, GKUB, etc. Except in the library because the librarian themselves gives students a tour.

After having the tour around campus, the Dean of SAPPD welcomed the students, and then students met with their respective guardian lecturers. During the day, the faculty invited new students to have a tour. Lecturers welcomed and instructed SAPPD new students to surround Labtek IX-A (PWK Building) and Labtek IX B (Architecture Building). They got to see studios, libraries, classes, and labs.

On the second day (9/11/2021), new students, for the first time, experience exercising at SARAGA as ITB students. They got to choose the sport they are interested in, namely aerobics, basketball, futsal, and swimming. And on the last day (10/11/2021), new students follow the practicum offline. They finally did the basic physics and basic chemistry practicum in the laboratory that they had only seen through the screen all this time.

Campus Tour is a good start in the opening stages of the ITB campus. Students hope that the COVID-19 virus continues to decline and can return to study on campus as before.
