These opportunities were discussed during a meeting between ITB Vice Rector for Communication, Partnerships, Alumni Affairs, and Administration, Dr. A. Rikrik Kusmara, and his team, and the University of Melbourne’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global), Prof. Frank Vetere, at the ITB Rectorate Building on Thursday (20/8/2026).

The meeting formed part of both universities’ efforts to advance a relationship that has been established for more than five years toward a more substantive and sustainable partnership.

One of the main topics discussed was the development of double degree programs for ITB students across various disciplines. This initiative aligns with ITB’s International Undergraduate Program (IUP), which has now expanded to 27 study programs. ITB continues to broaden its network of high-quality partner universities to provide students with more opportunities for international mobility and to pursue degrees from both institutions.

From Student Mobility to Postgraduate Research

The partnership between ITB and the University of Melbourne is also aimed at establishing a sustainable academic pathway spanning undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education.

In addition to study abroad and double degree programs, both universities discussed opportunities for joint supervision of postgraduate and doctoral students.

During the meeting, undergraduate education and postgraduate research collaboration were viewed not as separate initiatives, but as part of an integrated ecosystem. Students who become familiar with both institutions during their undergraduate studies could have pathways to continue to master’s or doctoral programs while also participating in collaborative research.

Expanding Short-Term Programs

The two institutions also discussed opportunities to expand short-term student mobility programs. Global trends indicate that increasing numbers of students are interested in international programs lasting several weeks rather than spending an entire semester abroad.

ITB has organized a number of short courses and summer courses with international university partners, typically lasting from one week to one month and offering the possibility of earning academic credits.

Through this strengthened collaboration, ITB and the University of Melbourne aim to develop an international partnership that goes beyond student exchanges and evolves into a long-term academic and research relationship. The partnership is expected to strengthen the capacities of both institutions while contributing to efforts to address various global challenges.
