BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Sumedang and its neighboring areas experienced a series of earthquakes, with the most recent registering a magnitude of 4.8 on Sunday (31/12/2023) evening. The tremors were felt across West Java, including Bandung, Subang, Garut, and Cirebon.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located 2 kilometers northeast of Sumedang Regency, with a depth of 5 kilometers. BMKG reported four earthquakes in the Sumedang area from December 31, 2023, to January 1, 2024.
Acting Regent of Sumedang, Herman Suryatman, confirmed that the earthquakes caused damage to hundreds of buildings, including Sumedang Regional Hospital (RSUD), leading to the evacuation of patients.
Prof. Dr. Irwan Meilano, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Science and Technology at ITB, warned that while the earthquakes may not have been of significant magnitude, their shallow depth and the geological characteristics of West Java could amplify their impact. He emphasized the importance of understanding the earthquake source parameters and urged increased awareness among the public.
Prof. Meilano highlighted three key factors contributing to the earthquakes' impact: the shallow depth of the seismic activity, the region's volcanic soil composition, and the dense population and infrastructure in Sumedang and its surroundings.
He urged the public, particularly in West Java, to remain vigilant and prepared for potential earthquake disasters, emphasizing the need to heed government instructions and stay informed about disaster developments.
As Indonesia continues to grapple with seismic activity, Prof. Meilano stressed the importance of learning from past incidents and building resilience to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
Residents are advised to stay calm, avoid panic, and stay updated with the latest information from authorities regarding disaster preparedness and response.
