BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – A lecturer from the Biomedical Engineering Research Group at the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Institut Teknologi Bandung (SEEI ITB), Dr. Allya Paramita Koesoema, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., was one of the distinguished speakers at the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Summit (AIIS) 2024. The event took place at the Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, from Monday to Wednesday (August 12-14, 2024).
AIIS 2024 serves as a platform for visionaries, pioneers, and innovators in the field of Artificial Intelligence to shape the future through groundbreaking ideas and advanced technology. The event features conferences and exhibitions that highlight the immense potential of AI across various sectors.
Representing ITB, Dr. Allya participated as a speaker in a panel discussion on "AI Readiness in Indonesia," alongside representatives from UNESCO, industry, and government.
The discussion focused on the rapid development of AI and its wide-ranging implications across all sectors of society. UNESCO emphasized the importance of global readiness to develop and apply AI ethically and responsibly. This requires a multifaceted approach, including raising public awareness, enhancing workforce AI competencies, preparing local industries, and establishing the necessary infrastructure, guidelines, and regulations. Strong intersectoral collaboration is essential for building a human-centered, responsible, and innovative AI ecosystem in Indonesia.
From an educational perspective, she highlighted the significant responsibility of preparing students and graduates for the future of AI. "Graduates must not only be prepared to use AI but also contribute their knowledge to the development of AI in Indonesia," she stated on Wednesday (21/8/2024).
During her session, Dr. Allya also discussed ITB's ongoing efforts to enhance competence and awareness of AI's potential within higher education, encompassing education, research, service, and operations. Currently, guidelines are being developed to direct the use of AI in enhancing efficiency and capabilities across various fields while prioritizing ethical standards and academic integrity.
In line with these efforts, ITB’s 2024 curriculum has begun integrating AI into course content and teaching activities. As a foundation for competency, starting in the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, ITB will introduce Data Literacy and AI courses for students across all study programs, ensuring that all graduates possess basic AI competencies. These foundational skills will be further enhanced by integrating AI into the curriculum based on disciplinary needs. In the teaching and learning process, AI will be employed to boost efficiency and capabilities in ways that enhance student competence while upholding academic integrity.
"Hence, AI will enhance students' abilities rather than increase our dependence on it. At ITB, the main principle is human over AI, AI must serve as a tool for students, not lead them," she concluded.
