ITB Sent a Team to Mount Semeru Eruption Site for Research and Community Service

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id-- Mount Semeru erupted on Saturday (4/12/2021). As a response, Institut Teknologi Bandung deployed a research team to the site for scientific and community service purposes on Tuesday (7/12/2021).

Dr. Irwan Meilano, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology (FITB) ITB, stated that the research team would not only perform study, but would also support the community around Lumajang Regency, East Java, following Mount Semeru's eruption. "The activity will take place from December 7 to 10, 2021," he declared on Monday (6/12/2021).

The FITB team consisted of Dr. Ir. Agustinus Bambang Setyadji, M.Sc., (principal researcher), Dr.Eng. Mirzam Abdurrachman, S.T., M.T. (principal researcher), Arif Susanto, S.T., M.T. (principal researcher), Dr. Idham Andri Kurniawan, S.T., M.T. (principal researcher), and Raihan Fajar (member).

At the eruption site, the disaster response team will participate in a number of actions. Four units of the IGW water purification system would be handed over from LPPM ITB for community service activities, as well as a fast mapping of impacted areas, the creation of a web-based information system, and an assessment of disaster risk management components.

The team would investigate the mechanism of the Mount Semeru eruption, study the spatio-temporal heat distribution using satellite imagery, analyze deformation from GNSS data, and investigate atmospheric dynamics.
