An annual prestigious math competition, IMC was participated by 591 contestants from 54 different countries this year. Five of ITB students then succeed to bring medals home.

Hopein Christofen Tang and M. Alif Aqsha received gold, Aditya Dwianto and Reynald Saputra received silver, while an honorable mention was received by Garry Kuwanto. Afif Humam, M.Si. along with Yusuf Hafidh, M.Si., lecturers at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), supervised these students.

The team that was sent to this competition was formed behind closed doors and was formed by level 3 and 4 students who previously have participated in ONMIPA/KNMIPA. They have passed the national selection and believed to be the best. To achieve best results in the competition, they prepared and trained hard. “In online situations like this, students practice more independently. The training was started during KNMIPA 2021, which was scheduled close to IMC 2021,” explained Alif Humam, the team leader.

The students faced some difficulties during the competition. Some online competitions require more self-preparations and equipment. For example, they were required to print out the questions by themselves, while not all of them owned a printing machine. The students then rewrote the questions manually, since the committee allowed them.

Alif Humam as the team leader felt grateful for the team’s achievements. This was also his first time being a team leader in an international competition. “ ITB Students should take advantage of opportunities and facilities in participating in competitions and activities that benefit themselves,” Afif said.
