BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Students from the Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering (FMPE), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) won second runner up in the Case Study Competition at the 2024 APECX (Annual Petroleum Competition and Exhibition) organized by SPE (Society Petroleum Engineering) UGM SC. Three students were awarded at the Gadjah Mada University Club, Yogyakarta, on Sunday (10/3/2024).
Held with the theme "Enhancing The Contribution of Oil and Gas for Future Energy Resiliency '', APECX 2024 held various competitions including case study competition, business case competition, geothermal study case competition, mud innovation competition, paper and poster competition, as well as petrosmart competition. ITB’s Catty Fairy Team qualified for the finals after ranking second out of 22 competing teams.
Consisting of Fayza Anissa, Asri Permatasari S., and Jovita Vala M. M., the Catty Fairy Team proposed the development of energy transition in the oil and gas industry using CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage) technology as an effort to reach Net Zero Emission in Indonesia by 2050.
"Problem statements, data, objectives, and scope of the case provided led us to propose a decarbonization project in East Kalimantan by identifying suitable candidates in fields such as source, utility, and storage," said Fayza.
All three parts of the case have their own core problems and solutions. In the capture section, the team identified a number of technologies that can capture CO2 by considering several parameters, such as: energy consumption, efficiency, and cost. In the utilization section, PAG (Polymer-Alternating-Gas) performance analysis was carried out as an EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) method in the selected field. Lastly, the storage department conducts qualitative studies regarding geological formations that can safely store sustainable CO2.
Took up to four months to finish, this competition lasted from November 29, 2023-March 10, 2024 and was led by an abstract work on the Preliminary Stage selection. Aside from its technical aspects, the same vision and mission is crucial to have as a team. "Each of us has different backgrounds, we came from different professional and academic organizations. It is quite difficult to work collaboratively," said Fayza.
Jovita added that in the process, they had to face some difficulties, starting from limited data access to technical knowledge that had not been obtained from lectures.
"We are still in our sixth semester and unable to take EOR courses. However, we took the initiative to be mentored by lecturers and indirectly received materials,” said Jovita. They also frequently consult with experts in their fields.
"Although it takes a lot of time and effort, it is really worth it. There are many benefits in participating in competitions like this," said Asri.
They view participation in this case study can lead to more creative, critical, and innovative thinking skills for problem-solving, especially in the field of oil and gas. This is in line with the second tridharma of higher education, which is conducting research and development.
