ITB's Doctor Open Session : RR Dhian Damajani

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – On Saturday (7/6), situated in Annex building 3rd floor, RR Dhian Damajani defended her dissertation titled “Third Space Phenomena in Kota Bandung : Paradox of Contemporary Urban Public Space”. The dissertation was about to recognize characteristic of third space phenomena in Kota Bandung and also identifying power syntheses on it.
Through her research, Damajani took three case studies each representing the three elements, Space-Time-Actor. First case was took place in Gasibu, where the actor and the time elaborate with situation there. Second case was took place in open space alongside Cikapundung river near Braga. Diversity of third space in the area was formed by daily activity in the structured rhythm. Meanwhile, the third space was local public transportation route called angkot. In this case, the actor role play had become central part.
The idea of third space was popularized by Edward Soja through his book titled “Third space: Journey to Los Angeles and Other Real–and–Imagine Places”. The idea of third space is alternative approach in looking, sight seeing, and understanding spatial phenomena as well as presenting opportunity how the world being pictured, mapped, and displayed. Therefore space can be categorized in threes main area as casual space, as abstract and imagination space and the third space that bridging between realities and imagination. The idea of third space in the context of urban planning give priority start from the means of space to place making given by societies.
RR Dhian Damajani earn bachelor from Architecture Study Program of ITB in the 1993. She was continues her education at the same department and attaint master degree in the 1997. Born in Bandung, January 12, 1969, Dhian Damajani took first place on international park site planning championship titled “The Garden of Hope: Love, Peace and Harmony “Dua Nusa”, in Nusa Dua, Bali in the 2005.
