BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Half a century after first setting foot on campus as students, the 1975 alumni of the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) held a historic joint exhibition titled "Trail of Journey: Art & Design Exhibition". The exhibition, which took place from August 24 - September 7, 2025, at the Soemardja Gallery, ITB, was officially opened by renowned artist, Dr. (HC) Nyoman Nuarta, the Dean of FSRD ITB, Dr. Kahfiati Kahdar, M.A., and the Vice-Rector for Communications, Partnerships, Alumni, and Administration, Dr. Andryanto Rikrik Kusmara, S.Sn., M.Sn.

This event is the first of its kind to be held by an FSRD ITB cohort to celebrate their 50-year journey, making it a pioneering moment. According to the event coordinator and retired FSRD ITB lecturer, Drs. Alfonzo Ronald Koapaha, M.Sn., the exhibition is not just a nostalgic event, but a statement. "We want to say that we still exist and we are still creating," he said in an interview.

In line with the exhibition's introductory text, "Trail of Journey" was chosen as the title because the event serves as a reflective moment to look back on what has been done and achieved over 50 years. The exhibition features works from ten artists of the '75 cohort, including pieces from deceased alumni as a form of tribute.

The displayed works are highly diverse, reflecting the personal and professional journeys of each artist. One such piece is the painting "Ravana's Family Party" by Ramadhan Bouqie, a social critique of the current situation. Meanwhile, Ago Bastaman presents a three-dimensional relief work inspired by his personal memories with his beloved horse from the past.

There is also Suryasa M. Oktiawan, who creates art from memorable used objects with wire, and Nono Imam Rahajoe, who showcases the path of his career as an interior designer that has penetrated the export market. "Every work exhibited is a reflection of the life journey of each alumnus," as stated in the event's introduction.

The exhibition also became a platform for reflecting on the shifts in the art and design world over the last 50 years. Several artists highlighted the significant differences between art education in their era and today. "In the past, the emphasis might have been on very strong skills. More recently, perhaps the focus is more on concepts and ideas," said Ago Bastaman.

Ramadhan Bouqie added that in his era, fine arts were still in the more structured modernism period, whereas the current contemporary era offers broader freedom of expression, supported by technological advancements. As baby boomers, these artists feel fortunate to have experienced the analog period and are now still able to keep up with the developments of the digital age.

Ultimately, "Trail of Journey" serves not only as an accountability report from the FSRD ITB Class of '75 for their 50 years of dedication to the art world but also as a valuable source of inspiration for the current generation of artists and designers.
