Prof. Wiranto Arismunandar, Rector of ITB for 1988-1997 Period, Passed Away

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - ITB expressed deep condolences over the passing of one of the best sons of ITB, Prof. Ir. Wiranto Arismunandar, UMKM., who was the rector of ITB for the 1988-1997 period. He passed away on Wednesday, May 19 2021. The sad news was received at around 13.14 WIB. He was laid in state at his own house in Bukit Dago Utara 1 No. 6, Bandung.

On Thursday, May 20 2021, from 07.30-08.00 WIB, there was a farewell ceremony in Aula Barat of ITB to release the deceased's body ITB to the state. The ceremony was attended only by families and ITB leaders in a limited number. The ceremony was live-streamed via ITB's official channel on YouTube. After the release procession in Albar, the deceased will be buried with a military ceremony at the Tomb of the Bupatis of Bandung, Jl. Karang Anyar, Bandung.

ITB leaders expressed their deep condolences and prayed to Allah to forgive, bless, and keep him safe and strengthen the families so they could sincerely accept the death.

The deceased was born in Semarang on November 19, 1933. He earned his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Indonesia (1959), master's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University (1960), and doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stanford (1961-1962).

In the course of his career, he served as the Rector of ITB for the period 1988-1997, the deputy chairman of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) for the period 1978-1989, a senior scientist at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology Indonesia (BPPT) since 1989, an expert in the Archipelago Aircraft Industry, and Minister of Education and Culture during the Seventh Development Cabinet in 1998.

As a professor of thermodynamics, Prof. Wiranto received a number of awards, including the Satyalancana Dwidya Award from the Minister of Defense, then several awards such as Satyalancana Karya Satya Bintang Satu (1990), Satyalancana Karya Satya for 30 years of service, and the 1998 Bintang Jasa Utama from the President B.J. Habibie.
