NUS SSI aims to bring together students from the Asia-Pacific region to learn together in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), with the hope of becoming a catalyst for graduate studies in STEM. During the SSI program, participants engaged in various interesting activities, including plenary lectures with renowned professors, discussions with NUS scientists and educators, and working on case studies in the laboratory.

Earron and Aliyah had different motivations when deciding to apply for NUS SSI. Earron was drawn to the program because of the exciting topics and the opportunity to engage in discussions with experts. Meanwhile, Aliyah was particularly interested after reading about the entire program, especially the material on nature-based solutions for biodiversity and carbon conservation, as she wanted to learn how to create sustainable agriculture and find solutions for climate change.

Their preparation for SSI involved requesting recommendation letters from their academic advisors and writing essays about their reasons for joining the program and the contributions they could make.

After participating in NUS SSI, they both expressed that they gained new insights from professors conducting research in relevant fields. Aliyah saw an opportunity to utilize NUS's technology and expand her knowledge in biology and other technologies. Earron also shared that he could see how technology could be applied to more sustainable agriculture.

Earron and Aliyah had a very positive first impression during their time at NUS. They were amazed by the different environment and facilities available.

"I was initially shocked because all the lecturers at NUS are so impressive. Every time we want to learn something new, they explain the background of why we need to learn it and how it applies in the real world. Because of that, I could visualize what I wanted to learn and understand it quickly," said Aliyah.

"The professors are also very humble, and they were excited to welcome new students. So, we felt comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions," Earron added.

After attending NUS SSI, they hope to apply the knowledge and skills they gained in their future studies and research as well as contribute to creating sustainable solutions in agriculture and the environment.

For other students interested in similar programs, Earron and Aliyah suggest not being afraid to try and take every opportunity to learn as much as possible.

"For those who want to apply in the next opportunity, don't be afraid. As ITB students, we are quite well-known in Asia for our knowledge, so there's no need to feel inferior. Focus on exploring knowledge and networking as much as possible," said Earron.
