Conducting Research in Japan and South Korea, ITB Students Participate in the 2026 Joint Supervision Program

JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA, itb.ac.id - The 2026 Joint Supervision Program is a strategic initiative specifically designed to expand Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)’s international research collaboration network. The program primarily aims to increase the number of ITB outbound students studying abroad, providing them with opportunities to receive direct input and guidance from highly respected professors and researchers at leading universities around the world.

The program was joined by four Geophysical Engineering students, namely Swenly Yolanda, Nadya Putri Widjaya, Pricilia Owyneth Myndillian Latupeirissa, and Farhan Elsano Chaniago, as well as two Geological Engineering students, Daffa Atalla Putra and Ash Shiddiq Muadib Bale.

This year, the students were placed at three highly reputable universities: Kyushu University in Japan, Inha University in South Korea, and The University of Tokyo in Japan. The program was conducted from June 28 to July 25, 2026.

The students conducted research under the direct supervision of experts and joint supervisors at the host universities. Their research topics focused on addressing complex challenges in the fields of Earth sciences and renewable energy, specifically Sensitivity Analysis of Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) for CO2 Plume Delineation, The Use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) VSP Technology for CO2 Plume Delineation, and The Development of an Integrated CO2 Monitoring Method.

The program provided the participants with a valuable opportunity to experience an international academic environment firsthand. Daffa, one of the participants in the 2026 Joint Supervision Program, shared during an interview on Tuesday (September 1, 2026), “Participating in this program has been one of the most meaningful experiences I have had as a student. I noticed that students in developed countries are very meticulous, disciplined, and serious about their work. Prof. Takeshi Tsuji Sensei paid close attention to my learning process and made sure that I truly benefited from every session. He also regularly asked how I was doing every day, which meant a lot to me while I was in a foreign country. Overall, this program broadened my perspective on academic and everyday life in developed countries, and I returned home with a clearer understanding of the standards I want to set for myself.”

In addition to their academic activities, the students were also required to adapt to and socialize with their surroundings, as shared by Farhan, another participant, “During our research in Korea, we encountered many new experiences that required us to adapt. Beyond academic activities, our daily routines of taking the subway and buses, as well as carefully checking food ingredient labels to find halal meals, became memorable experiences. The orderly and disciplined culture of the local community, such as queuing and following proper road-crossing practices, became a valuable source of inspiration that motivated us to continue applying these good habits after returning home,” Farhan said on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).

The implementation of the Joint Supervision Program is rooted in ITB’s strategic commitment to realizing its vision as a World Class University (WCU), strengthening interdisciplinary research capacity, and increasing both the quantity and quality of internationally recognized scientific publications.

As a concrete implementation of this program within the Earth sciences cluster this year, the Joint Supervision Program was also aligned with ITB’s proactive efforts to address global challenges related to sustainable energy solutions and subsurface management.
