Bandung, itb.ac.id — Three Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Graduates who took part in Ideathon-Architecture Without Walls (AWW) 2023 event, won a Social Impact Award as the Simpang ABanCeuy Team.

Held with the theme “(Un)usual Archetype: Adaptability for Inclusive Space”, Ideathon 2023 invited participants to collaborate and create ideas to solve problems inclusively within public areas.

Simpang ABanCeuy team consists of Ade Suci Rahmadona (Bachelor of Architecture ITB), Yuni Ariefah (Bachelor of Architecture ITB), Tegar Wahyu Akbar (Masters of Architecture Design ITB), Hamzah Al Asadulloh (Master of Arts Royal College of Art), and Muhammad Riz'qi Januar (Bachelor of Architecture Engineering UPI). This team was mentored by Gita Nofieka Dwijayati, co-founder of Tune Map.

The team chose to design an infrastructure scheme, specifically a pedestrian crossing with the name “Simpang ABanCeuy”. The project highlighted a raised crossing concept, a crosswalk that is designed to be on the same level as the sidewalk, providing elevated space to pedestrians. With this, people with disabilities are allowed to cross easily and safely. On top of that, the team has evaluated areas surrounding the intersection, shifting the road in front of the commercial area to be a public open space, creating an integrated commercial area that is more suitable for residents.

The main idea was based on past observations regarding conditions at the intersection of Jalan Banceuy and Jalan ABC which are not suitable for pedestrians. "This intersection is often used by residents and visitors while shopping at shops around the area. Therefore, the need for better pedestrian infrastructure is classified as a basic need in this area. We also saw that in both the east and west sides of the intersection, there are shops and commercial areas that would benefit more from having a dependable crosswalk in the area," said Hamzah.

Prior to the event, the team had recently taken part in a workshop that was guided by professionals in the field of urban spatial inclusivity. They conducted field surveys and spoke to various parties that were involved, including real-time pedestrians, public transportation drivers, street vendors, as well as kiosk owners. Apart from that, the team examined challenges that are faced by the visually impaired when walking down through this location.

In the zoning aspects, the team effectuated pedestrianization on the road in front of the commercial area and around the intersection, creating a space that is open to the public and will allow residents to shop amicably. "With all the elements above, it is hoped that Simpang ABanCeuy can fulfill the regulatory standard that prioritizes people in urban spaces," said Hamzah.

During the final presentation on Wednesday (16/08/2023), Gita, the team mentor, offered guidance and feedback for the team’s design process. This team works collaboratively by dividing roles without needing to dwell on the pre-assigned tasks. “Teamwork and communication are keys in project assembling,” said Yuni.
