BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — Students of Joint Preparation Phase from the Faculty of Arts and Design (also known as TPB FSRD in Indonesian) held an academic exhibition entitled Arnavala. The exhibition was conducted from Friday (10/6/22) to Saturday (11/6/22) both online at Arnavala official website (https://www.arnavala.com/) and offline at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)’s East Hall.

This annual exhibition, being conducted at the end of the even semester, was a stage for showcasing academic artworks and other miscellaneous works that have been produced during TPB. Kukuh Rizki Satriaji, S.Ds.,M.T., the acting coordinator of TPB FSRD, explained, “There are more than 5000 works that will be displayed in this exhibition. I am sure every work here has its own interesting story behind it, with each incorporating the characteristics and features of its creator, that is, the student.”

The name Arnavala itself came from Sanskrit; Arnav means “sea” while Kala means “art.” These two words, combined together, represented the background of this year’s exhibition. The integration of these words into Arnavala has a meaning of “sea of arts,” a place in which students of TPB FSRD ITB 2021 had been learning arts and design so as to create myriad and inspirative creations.

At this exhibition, the class of FSRD ITB 2021 raised the issue of hybrid lecturing, a challenge they had to deal with for the past one year.

The exhibitors themselves added up to 329 students from TPB FSRD 2021, of which 253 were students from the Ganesha campus, 43 from the Cirebon campus, and the remaining 33 from the Jatinangor campus. After TPB has ended, these students will continue their education in their own respective study programs.

During the exhibition’s opening, the Dean of FSRD, Dr. Andryanto Rikrik Kusmara, S.Sn., M.Sn., declared to them, “Don’t forget all the journey you’ve gone through in the last two semesters, and with this exhibition marking the end of TPB, this would be the best way for you young students to explore the increasingly diverse, dynamic, and challenging world of art, craft, and design in the future.”

The exhibition consisted of three parts: pre-event, main event, and post-event. There were two events performed at the pre-event. The first one was “Selingan,” a live sketching and a small parade, that was held on Sunday (5/6/2022) at Teras Gasibu and at the parade route spanning from Bandung Geological Museum to Gedung Sate. The second one was the “Finding Your New Form” event featuring a Character Design Workshop that was conducted online on Wednesday (8/6/2022).

Three different events, besides an arts exhibition, were held at the main event. The first two events were conducted on Friday (10/6/2022), namely an art performance called “Live Performance ARNAVALA by TPB FSRD 2021” and a workshop titled “Workshop Embroidery #BermainBenang” with Shafa Inayah as the speaker. The third event was also a workshop, this time titled “Workshop Mix Media Akrilik-Watercolor” and was delivered by M. Rusyan Yasin on Saturday (11/6/22).

At the end of this series of continuous activities, or post-event, TPB FSRD 2021 held “Arnawirasa,” an event featuring a content-creation challenge. The event was themed as an act of environmental awareness and conducted between 20-28th June. In addition, TPB FSRD 2021 also held a collaborative event with AER.MOVEMENT, dubbed “Charity ft. AER.MOVEMENT,” to help distribute aid funds to provide trash bins, plant mangroves, and clean up beaches on 9-15th June in Buru Island, Maluku.
