BANDUNG, itb.ac.id- Plant Taxonomy courses,Forestry Engineering ITB conduct field study in Taman Buru Gunung Masigit Kareumbi (TBMK). Field Lecture was held for two days on Saturday and Sunday (25-26 / 10-2014). This Field Lecture is the prime field lecture for students of Forestry Engineering ITB 2013. The existence of a field study aimed at understanding the materials that have been previously taught  in practicum, where students can see the direct object that can not be provided in the lab.
Know the Upland Plant Characteristics

Plants are the main components that make up the forest. Therefore, understanding in knowing morphological characters to identify the plant becomes important to study. It aims to determine the range of potential forestry development in the future. TBMK is one of the conservation area representative to describe the upland forests or mountains.

In this field study students are invited in various activities, such as trekking and identify various plants along the path of the tracks, searching for plants according to the character and the descriptions that have been given, and to review the type of plant and character along the path of the track verbally. Students are given a sheet containing the observations of the species name, local name, and character. Every plant is found recorded in the observation sheet. Furthermore, the results obtained in the plant inventory data into TBMK.

In addition, students also take some part of a plant to make a herbarium samples (preserved plant) and described its character. Students are also required to know the distinctive character of plants such as Puspa (Shima wallichii) which has the character of the young leaves are red and white flowers and distinctive fragrance. The samples consist of a family of predefined types each group. These activities was to make the students have the competence to identify plants in the forest, which will become an important skill in the world of work later.

"With the lecture field, I can practice what is learned directly in the lab and it becomes easy to identify plants by the morphological characters that look. Lecture field is also designed with interesting methods so that more fun," commented Mohammed Adi Rini (Forestry Engineering ITB 2013) .

Overview of Taman Buru Masigit Kareumbi (TBMK)

In addition to studying the characters upland forest vegetation, this first field study also aims to introduce students to the conservation area. Conservation area is one of the objects is important for forestry engineering students in Indonesian forest management.

Taman Buru Gunung Masigit Kareumbi belong to the nature conservation area region function is intended primarily for recreational purposes and hunting tours. The area has an area of about 12,000 ha watershed (DAS) Cimanuk which serves as a buffer for the Citarum, the biggest river in West Java. Besides as a buffer zone, the region became the preservation of the region's population Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch) and the Javan slow loris (Nycticebus javanicus), as well as the development of a recovery game hunting, such as deer.
