BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - In cooperation with ITB Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD), Total Bhakti Foundation organized a design competition which aims to promote the local content of East Kalimantan. The design made the participants were also given some modern touch. As many as 91 artworks from students of ITB FSRD, S1 and S2 program, were submitted to the committee. The competition has reached the first assesment stage. This stage selects ten ideas to be made into prototypes. Two prototypes will be selected and be made into final products. The competition was conducted on November 2011 to January 14, 2012, and is held by the coordination of Dr. Kahfiati Kahdar, MA, Chairman of ITB Craft Design Study Program.
It was expected that this competition stimulates the development of artistic and original designs among East Kalimantan local craftsmen. Therefore, the use of local materials such as rattan, bamboo, pandanus, or other materials commonly found in East Kalimantan is highly preferred. In addition, the products must also use the webbing technique familiar to East Kalimantan craftsmen. The traditional pattern and decoration must appear in the designs. Some modifications are allowed as long as they do not change the pattern's original meaning. The designs made by the participant are products of personal accessories, home decorations, and souvenirs.
"The participants must utilize the richness of East Kalimantan that ranges from raw materials to workmanship techniques. The works that are selected will be mass-produced and sent to domestic as well as international market," said Siti Amanah Esti, one of the committee and a lecturer of ITB Craft Design Study Program.
