BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — The Faculty of Earth Sciences at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan initiated a geological mapping and survival event, "Geological Mapping in Musang Cave," in Panggong Lalat, Musang Cave, Kelantan, Malaysia, from August 27th to September 7th, 2023.

This activity drew Geoscience students from across Southeast Asia, with two ITB Geological Engineering students from the class of 2020, M. Elfa Rando and Affan Aji Wiwatama, attending as representatives of the Geological Engineering Students’ Association ‘GEA’ at ITB, representing Indonesia.

The program aimed to equip participants with high-caliber survival and geological mapping skills through navigating challenging landscapes. Moreover, participants were taught to collaborate without supervision in the forest mapping area and were given the opportunity to cooperate with the locals.

Apart from the main activity, participants organized a community service event, conducting medical checkups for locals in the mapping area and teaching kindergartners.

M. Elfa Rando shared that he gained unique knowledge and experience, such as mapping uncharted areas and organizing a community service program, providing him with an opportunity to interact with the locals.

In his opinion, the side projects further enriched the program. He believes that the program may open new perspectives for the region-wide participants, especially Indonesians and Malaysians, regarding the international world.
