BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Being one of the selected outstanding students by the campus is undoubtedly an excellent experience to have as a student. Leonardus Hans Sebastian Tahyudin, a member of the class of 2020, placed 2nd place in ITB.
Majoring in metallurgical engineering, Hans continues exploring many fields of study, both in and out of his study program. His primary interest lies in science and technology- especially in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering- because he finds it exciting, and only few people know about this field.
Hans is also active in debates. He first started his English debate journey during high school at SMA Negeri 3 Solo, where he participated in the Nine City debate competition held by SMA Negeri 9 Yogyakarta. Winning the competition encouraged him to join more competitions, both on the national and international scale. Upon entering university, he was elected as the Head of ITB SF (Student English Forum) for the 2022/2023 period. Some of the competitions like KDMI (Student Debate Competition of Indonesia) and NUDC (National University Debating Championship), were represented by him individually or in the name of ITB.
After winning several competitions in the country, Hans started his journey to debate on an international stage. He has earned the credentials to become a judge for debate matches, ranking among the top three in international events. In his second year, he was invited as one at the SDG UNDP Debate Competition and the Bappenas debate competition.
Throughout 2023, Hans has actively participated in many competitions as a participant and a judge. Recently, he was given the trust to be one of the core members of the board of judges at the 2023 NUCD competition.
"People often assume that debate is just talking, yet in reality it is the art of using complex, abstract information so that people can easily understand what we want to convey," Hans said.
