ITB Accelerates HR Development in IKN and Surrounding Areas Through a Beginner Game Workshop for Gen-Z

BALIKPAPAN, itb.ac.id - Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) with the New Capital City of Nusantara (IKN) successfully held the Game Developer Workshop, themed "500 Beginner Game Developers for High School Students: 500 Gen-Z Youth Dare to Dream, Play Together, Build National Independence." This workshop was the culmination of a series of activities that began on October 10, 2024.

A total of 794 students participated in the online activities, with 120 selected to join the intensive workshop held at the Integrated Laboratory of the Kalimantan Institute of Technology from November 2–3, 2024.

More than 100 students and five accompanying teachers from eight high schools in Sepaku District, North Penajam Paser Regency; three high schools in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan; and 20 students of Informatics and Visual Communication Design of Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) participated in this event.

The event was opened by the Deputy for Socio-Cultural Affairs and Community Empowerment of the Nusantara Capital City Authority, Drs. Alimuddin, M.Si., followed by the signing of an MoU between ITB and ITK for related activities.

Participants enthusiastically absorbed foundational material on game programming and 3D design delivered by the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI) of ITB, international game developers, and artists. They also engaged in group projects to develop game prototypes, gaining exposure to AR/VR technology from ITB's Metaverse Lab and participating in a mini e-sports contest.

This workshop aims to be a positive stimulant to equip Gen-Z youth with invaluable experience and foster the growth of a creative economy community in IKN. This is in line with Presidential Decree No. 19 of 2024 on the Acceleration of the National Game Industry.

The workshop is part of ITB's Community Service Program for IKN and its surroundings, initiated by ITB's DRPM, supported by the Nusantara Capital City Authority, led by the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI) and the Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD) ITB, in collaboration with Indonesia's largest game developers, Agate & Agate Academy, OzyGames Studio, the Kalimantan Institute of Technology, Bebras Indonesia, and the Metaverse Lab of SEEI ITB.

The event was also sponsored by Bank BRI and Bank Kaltimtara.
