ITB Architecture Students Win First Place Nationally with DeepBIM, an AI Innovation in Building Modeling

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Three Architecture students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) won first place at the 2026 Wiratman BIM Competition (WBBC) with DeepBIM, a quality assurance framework for Building Information Modeling (BIM) integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The innovation was developed to address the need for a more measurable and integrated BIM process, particularly in auditing model information compliance and connecting building models with cost data.
The BIMaxxing team, consisting of Ignacio Kevin Alberiann, Hilmi Nufal Azizi, and Asybel Bintang, developed DeepBIM as part of the Lattice Hotel Summarecon Gedebage project. During the model coordination process, the team resolved 84.22 percent of clashes, or conflicts between model elements, reducing thousands of conflict points to only hundreds.
The approach demonstrates the potential of AI to help architects, planners, and construction industry professionals develop more efficient, accurate, and adaptive workflows. Such technological development is important because the quality of building planning and coordination directly affects the efficiency of the overall construction process.
DeepBIM consists of two layers. The first functions as an auditor for model information compliance, while the second is an AI agent capable of directly connecting Revit models with cost data using natural language.
For the team, the competition provided an opportunity to demonstrate that architecture students can contribute meaningfully to BIM development and further expand its application through AI technology.
“We wanted to test whether the idea we had developed—integrating BIM workflows with an artificial intelligence layer—could stand up in a national competitive forum, rather than remain only within the studio,” Ignacio said.
The team divided responsibilities based on each member’s strengths and expertise. Ignacio, as team leader, focused on structural reasoning and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP), Hilmi handled design and landscape aspects, while Asybel focused on BIM and technology development. With only three members, each of them also had to take on more than one role.
The team emphasized that DeepBIM is not simply an application of existing AI features. Instead, it is a system they developed themselves by combining a model compliance auditor with an AI agent capable of working across multiple data sources.
Throughout their preparation for the competition, the team was also mentored by Ir. Fauzan Alfi Agirachman, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., who has expertise in BIM.
His role was particularly important in providing conceptual guidance and helping the team sharpen the way they positioned and defended their ideas so that they remained credible and logical before the judges. Whenever the team became too immersed in technical issues, his guidance helped them return to the bigger picture of the competition. The mentoring was provided throughout the consultation process as well as during the team’s preparation for the final stage.
The team encouraged other students not to wait until they feel completely ready before entering a competition. According to them, having the courage to test an idea and the willingness to support it with evidence are more important than waiting until one has perfect experience or resources.
“Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready enough’ to participate. If you have an idea that seems too ambitious, pursue it and prepare supporting evidence that aligns with it. Your unique perspective can often become your greatest strength rather than a weakness,” Ignacio said.
The team also emphasized the importance of preparing a solid BIM Execution Plan (BEP). The division of responsibilities, workflow, and targeted outcomes should be determined from the outset, as the BEP serves as the main guideline throughout the project development process.
