BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — A professor of the Urban Design and Planning Research Group (UDP RG) from the School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPD) Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) Ibnu Syabri, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his response to the importance of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in city development. He made these remarks during a webinar titled ‘AI-Based and Big Data Analytics on Urban Planning and Design,” which was held in a hybrid format on Thursday (August 10, 2023).

There were four panelists in the webinar, including Andres Sevtsuk, Ph.D (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Safiah Moore (ARUP Jakarta), Ir. Ridwan Sutriadi, S.T, M.T, Ph.D. (UDP RG - SAPPD ITB), and Dr.Eng. Maya Safira, S.T., M.T. (UDP RG - SAPPD ITB).

He commented on his observations revolving around big data and artificial intelligence use. He reminisced how the concept existed since the 1960s on a smaller scale computer. However, alongside technological development, there exist a wide myriad of data sources, including texts, audios, images, and videos. The various data were used to analyze a range of objects in images, as well as monitor land use development from time to time.

He also spotlighted the research conducted by worldwide experts, which stayed relevant in the current urban situation. For example, he was inspired by Andres Sevtsuk, Ph.D.’s works in New York and Los Angeles which stood deeply tied to land use development and its effect on community behavior in food consumption and mobility. He also appreciated Dr.Eng. Maya Safira, S.T., M.T.’s research regarding land use in Indonesia and highlighted the importance of travel application for individuals as a factor that transforms cities.

He asserted that technological development not only revolves around mere tools and techniques. “It’s more important for the government to use data effectively in city environment management,” he stated. He also underlined the event’s significance for in-campus knowledge development, both from the theoretical and practical aspects, as well as for professionals and the government, especially local and central governance.

He wished that the webinar would kickstart ideas of smart solutions to face various urban challenges.
