BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held a Studium Generale on Wednesday (26/2/2025) at Aula Barat, ITB Ganesha Campus, featuring Martha Suherman, a professional photographer and Broncolor Brand Ambassador. The session carried the theme “Beyond the Lens: Photography as a Medium for Expression, Change, and Inspiration in Seeing the Reality of the World.”
She shared her career journey in the field of photography. According to her, photography is not merely a hobby—it also opens wide opportunities for building networks. She noted that photography communities bring people together regardless of profession or age, making interactions feel more natural.
“Everyone can blend in because they share the same hobby. Networking is important, especially for those who pursue photography as a profession,” she said.
As a photographer experienced in corporate and executive portrait photography, she emphasized the importance of creating a comfortable working atmosphere and fostering solid teamwork. She explained that when dealing with clients who have tight schedules, photographers must be able to understand their needs and create a supportive environment.
“A photographer cannot work alone. Usually there is a team, including a makeup artist and a stylist, to ensure optimal results. Furthermore, we also need to understand their character so the photoshoot can run smoothly,” she added.
She also highlighted the importance of consistency in building a photographer’s visual identity. She encouraged beginner photographers to discover a signature style in their work—whether through lighting, composition, or photographic concepts. In her view, photographers with a strong identity are easier to recognize and have a distinctive appeal within the creative industry.
“Every photographer produces the same output: a photo. However, the process of reaching that final result is what differentiates the value of each photographer,” she said.
She also shared the challenges of being an underwater photographer, as there are many distractions that can affect the final image. Unpredictable environmental conditions require photographers to have more refined technical skills and extra patience to capture the right moment.
She emphasized that to fully commit to photography, one must be willing to take risks and remain professional throughout every process.
“Be brave to take the risk and be professional,” she concluded.
