BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — The Geophysical Engineering Student Association "TERRA" of Institut Teknologi Bandung (HIMA TG "TERRA" ITB) organized the International Undergraduate Geophysics Competition (IUGC) 2026, which concluded on Saturday (October 3, 2026), at ITB Ganesha Campus. Under the theme "Beyond Exploration: Geophysics in Action for Energy Transition, Disaster Resilience, and Sustainable Society," IUGC 2026 served as a comprehensive platform for integrating the three pillars of higher education—education, research, and community service—through academic competitions based on real-world case studies, capacity building, and community engagement.
Executive Director of IUGC 2026, Berryl Bima Putra Diesny, stated that the event reflected ITB students' commitment to developing highly skilled and globally competitive human resources in the field of geosciences.
"We strive to integrate the three pillars of higher education, particularly through analytical mentoring, competitions based on real-world cases, and community service initiatives that directly benefit society," he said.
IUGC 2026 featured a series of competitions for university and high school students.

Making a Tangible Impact: Disaster Mitigation Education and Portable Flood Barriers
Beyond scientific competitions, IUGC 2026 also sought to create a positive social impact through its community service program, "GeoImpact and GeoAware." One of the initiatives took place at SMAN 1 Bojongsoang, a school located in a flood-prone area characterized by low-lying terrain and particular soil conditions.

During the program, ITB students provided geoscience-based disaster mitigation education to students and teachers. The organizing committee also donated portable flood barriers to help the school prepare for periods of heavy rainfall.
"This practical initiative demonstrates that geophysics extends beyond theoretical knowledge and can provide tangible solutions that benefit local communities," Berryl said.
