BANDUNG, itb.ac.id- On Saturday (9/8), ComLabs ITB again perform Free IT Saturday Lesson (FSL) for ITB students. Carry the theme “Community Open Source (part 2)”, FSL presented Linux Trainer Yusuf Kurniawan as main speaker. Took place in Multimedia Room, Yusuf farther explained the community of open source user. Among regular activity held by the community, Yusuf stated, are internal workshop, general seminar, software development, writing a book or article, and also migration and support. Internal workshop addressed for community member to give the understanding of Linux through series of trainings. Open seminar and general workshop are somehow addressed for student, college and society in common for the agenda of open source software socialization as a solution upon piracy problem. Linux OS consumer can develop software and access source code so that modification can be done as according to their specific requirement. Today Linux software development is still a continuing activity to enable open source software as powerful as licensed operating system. Make it rich with feature and application. Writing of article and book aimed to provide consumer with comprehensive Linux usage guidance. Migration service is performed for the company who moving from licensed operating system to Linux. Support come in the form of training and repairing the system if there found any 'bug' damage. Yusuf insisted from security stand point, Linux OS is certifiable. “So far we have not yet found any virus groan on Linux. Even some unreadable file in licensed OS is legible with Linux after the system altering its format. “Linux do not need driver, the application if have been recognized could ON directly”, Yusuf added. Yusuf said that amount of open source activist and programmer in Indonesia is still few in number. Though, software development is depends on the both parties. Moreover from absorption facet like marketing, promotion, and public enthusiasm in Indonesia toward open source software is still minim. Low level of political will of the government is also part of the weakness. “Very regrettably, though open source investment more beneficial for state compared to the licensed software investment. Investment in open source, mean the monetary circulation there will be concentrated in the country where the money is used for trainings. Meanwhile investments on licensed software mean more money 'fly' to the owner of the license,” Yusuf said.
