BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – For the dedication and services for more than 40 years in Institut Teknologi Bandung, Analytical Chemistry Research Group of ITB organized a farewell ceremony for Prof. Buchari entitled “Tribute to Prof. Buchari: Because of Him” at Aula Barat ITB on Saturday (23/2/2019).

Prof. Buchari is a professor, an intellectual, and a mentor to FMIPA ITB. He has made countless contribution in advancing and enhancing national welfare. The Dean of FMIPA, Prof. Edy Tri Baskoro, said that Prof. Buchari is a true scientist. “He regularly publishes scientific articles and mentor hundreds of students who are pursuing their degree. He also mentored lecture staffs on national level about analytical chemistry,” he explained.

About Prof. Buchari

Prof. Buchari was a bachelor student in ITB in 1968-1974. In the same year he graduated, Prof. Buchari began his service to Chemistry Study Program of ITB as a lecturer and was appointed as civil servant in 1977.

His thirst for knowledge moved him to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in France. He graduated from master’s program in Université Montpellier 2 in 1977 focusing in Analytical Electrochemistry and graduated from doctoral program in Académie de Montpellier in 1979. He also finished his post-doctoral study in Laboratorie de Chimie Nuclear et Industrielle, Ecole Centrale de Paris focusing in Analytical Separation.

During his service, Prof. Buchari has mentored hundreds of students in bachelor, master’s, and doctoral programs. He has written 138 scientific articles since 1997. He was also active as speakers in seminars or conferences in both home and abroad.

Besides being active as a lecturer, Prof. Buchari had undertook several position. He served as Head of Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (1982-1983), Head of Chemistry Program (1986-1991), Vice Dean for General Administration of FMIPA-ITB (1998-2001), Secretary General of Indonesian Chemical Society (1989-1991). Deputy Committee Head of Sixth Asian Symposium on Natural Plants and Spices (ASOMPS) (1990), Members of ITB’s Commission for Research (1981-1986), and Members of Senate of FMIPA ITB (1986-2001).

His dedication and services brought him to several achievements such as Model Lecturer III in ITB (1983), Outstanding Lecturer of Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani, Award from Indonesian Army General Rudini, Award for 25 Years of Service as Civil Servant in ITB (2000), and Satya Lencana Karya Satya 20 Years from the President of Indonesia (2001).

Prof. Buchari are known by his students for his friendly, patient, and smiley personality. “Prof. Buchari has never been sullen and is always patient with her students. He is also supportive and encouraged me during my doctoral study to find answers to problems when I was finishing my dissertation,” said Anna Permanasari, an alumnus of Chemistry Program ITB.

Half a Century Development of Analytical Chemistry in Indonesia

In the ceremony, Prof. Buchari explained about the development of Analytical Chemistry in Indonesia. In 1960s, analytical chemistry served as proof finder in determining the wrong and the right, as well as conducted investigation using analytical hierarchy in order to make good decisions. In the same time, analytical chemistry in Indonesia is directed more toward material analysis for mining and health.

“Because of development regarding materials in the world and its massive utilization in daily life, analytical chemistry from this day forward will be beneficial in the fields of food, transportation, electronics, defensive, energy and telecommunication. Hence, chemists should widen their knowledge capacity,” he said.

Moreover, analytical chemistry prowess in this modern era should be supported with modern devices equipped with mini sensor. “Next, the focus of analytical chemistry will be directed to nanoscience and nanotechnology, chemometrics, computational chemistry, and biosensor,” he said.

He hopes that the application of analytical chemistry in Indonesia will keep growing and bring benefit to community. “If in the past we worked very hard to develop it (analytical chemistry), now is the time to spread the benefit to Indonesia and hopefully analytical scientists in Indonesia can absorb the knowledge so that we do not get left behind other countries,” he said.
