YOGYAKARTA, itb.ac.id – Three students from the Pharmaceutical Science and Technology Study Program, School of Pharmacy, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), achieved an outstanding accomplishment at the Herbal Cosmetics Competition (HCC) held on Sunday, November 16, 2025. The competition challenged participants to develop natural-based cosmetic products through a series of scientific stages, including literature review, formulation, production, optimization, and final product evaluation.
The SGA Team, Grace Hendrawan, Agung Nugroho, and Shearavinna Easter, introduced their innovation Clariskin Nano, an anti-acne nanoemulsion cream formulated using extracts of temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), pandan leaves, and lemongrass. The product combines the effectiveness of nanoemulsion technology with sustainability principles applied throughout the formulation, production process, and packaging design.
Grace explained that the innovation stemmed from the team’s interest in the growing trends of green chemistry and sustainable cosmetics. “We chose nanoemulsion because we were already familiar with cream formulations and wanted to create an innovation that aligns with sustainability issues,” she said.

The team began developing the product in July, starting with brainstorming and proposal preparation before being selected as finalists. They completed the formulation and production stages in approximately one month while simultaneously managing Midterm Examinations, coursework, and their Final Project. Despite their demanding academic schedules, the three students remained committed to finishing the competition project.
Shearavinna shared that laboratory experimentation was both the most challenging and memorable part of the process. The team faced various hurdles, including repeated formulation failures, extracts that had not reached optimal concentration, limited materials, and antibacterial testing that required a high level of precision.
Although they experienced moments of pressure and frustration, they overcame each obstacle through effective communication, self-reflection, and strong collaboration. “There were times when we almost gave up, but teamwork and introspection helped us push through every challenge,” she said.
The competition provided valuable lessons for all members. They emphasized that teamwork and patience played crucial roles in helping them complete the project amid numerous academic responsibilities.
Agung added that he learned a great deal from his teammates, especially about perseverance and self-confidence. “I learned that with strong determination, something that initially seems difficult can be accomplished,” he said.
He also encouraged other students interested in joining similar competitions to maintain unity and resolve differences of opinion wisely so that every decision is accepted by all team members.
The team hopes that although Clariskin Nano is currently still a competition prototype, opportunities to further develop innovative cosmetic products remain open and promising.
The three students expressed their hope that their achievement at HCC will motivate them to participate in future competitions and produce innovations that benefit society and the academic community.
