BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Twelve high school students who were awarded the Advanced Indonesia Scholarship (BIM) recently participated in the Domestic Summer Youth Program (SYPDN) at the School of Life Sciences and Technology (SLST) at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). The program took place from July 31 to August 11, 2023. This activity is a collaborative effort between the National Achievement Centre (Puspresnas) and ITB.
Intan Taufik, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., who serves as the Coordinator of SYPDN activities at SLST ITB, stated that the primary objective of this activity is to offer a comprehensive understanding of the field of biological technology. This program aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to tackle future global challenges and provide valuable insights into study opportunities abroad. On Sunday (20/08/2023), she expressed our desire to enhance and offer additional insights.
At SLST ITB, the SYPDN program focuses on providing an overview of the rapidly advancing fields of biological technology worldwide. Participants receive a thorough introduction to several disciplines, including molecular and genetic engineering, bioinformatics, basic microbiology, ecology, and basic bioprocessing.
In addition to the theoretical introduction, the SYPDN program at SLST ITB offers practical experience through the inclusion of Lab Work Skills. Participants have the chance to gain hands-on experience and acquire practical skills in a laboratory setting. These skills cover a wide range of areas, including anatomy, microbial staining, PCR, and bioinformatics. Participants are also exposed to techniques that will prove valuable as they pursue their academic endeavors at the university.
"We also train them to work in the lab. At least they won't be surprised when they go to college because they have learned it before," he said.
The SYPDN program at SLST ITB also helps participants gain knowledge about study opportunities abroad through the Cultural Enrichment program. The participants receive valuable information about the education systems in different countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, and Australia. The speakers sharing their insights have personal experience studying in these countries. Additionally, students are exposed to various cultural experiences and provided with guidance on academic opportunities that can help them pursue their aspirations of studying overseas.
During the activity, participants gained firsthand experience in the field of biological technology through informative field visits. The participants were escorted to various locations, one of which was the Bogor Botanical Gardens. These gardens offer valuable knowledge on biodiversity and the implementation of biological technology for conservation purposes.
Furthermore, the participants had the opportunity to visit the Bell Living Lab, a start-up company led by alumni of ITB. The researchers investigated the production of innovative synthetic leather through the transformation of cellulose by microorganisms.
Following the main event, participants had the opportunity to visit the Geological Museum. This visit offered a fresh perspective on the significance of biological technology in addressing global challenges.
"The hope is that they know in the future there are many futuristic opportunities that actually answer the world's problems," hhe said.
In addition to prioritizing academic development, SLST ITB places significant emphasis on enhancing international communication skills and etiquette. Participants acquire valuable knowledge and understanding of how to effectively engage in cross-cultural interactions, which is crucial for their future academic and professional endeavors.
The top participant from Petra 2 Surabaya Christian High School at the SYPDN event held at SLST ITB, Rio Gavin Tanara, expressed, "I gained valuable knowledge at SLST that was not covered in my school curriculum." An enjoyable experience.
The SYPDN event at SLST ITB motivated attendees to delve into the field of biological technology with greater depth. This program helps shape future scientists and professionals who are prepared to tackle future challenges by providing a combination of theory, practical experience, and information on study opportunities abroad.
