Through the Discussion “Shaping Clay into Money,” FSRD ITB Explained the Potency of Pottery Industry

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The demand for pottery in Indonesia is progressively increasing. According to the data compiled by Ministry of Industry, pottery industry is developing about 10-15% every year. However, the number of producer and distributor that can meet the demand is not developing. This prompted the alumni and lecturers of FSRD ITB to educate the public on the potency of pottery industry through a discussion with the topic “Shaping Clay into Money” that was held at Kinekuru Library on Saturday (02/04/17).
The Importance of Identity in Works
The discussion that was held on Sunday invited several speakers that have long been involved in pottery industry. Some of them are Nurdian Ichsan, S.Sn, M.Sn (Head of Visual Arts Study Program ITB), Elina Farida (Pottery practitioner, founder of Elina Keramik) and Fauzi Andhika (Lecturer, initiator of Pori Keramik).
The discussion began with a presentation about how to define a pottery studio. “Actually, there is no fixed definition of what a pottery studio is,” said Nurdian. He then continued the session with a presentation about his experiences during running a pottery studio. He then told a story about his interest in the artistic value of pottery, not its functionalities that tend to be minimalist.
The discussion continued with a presentation on pottery business prospect in Indonesia. “If you want the business to improve rapidly, you as the owner has to be flexible about the design and follow the market trend but remember to maintain the identity in every product that go to the market,” said Fauzi. He then explained about how important comprehending the market share is to owner of pottery business. “If your design is minimalist, do not participate in the government exhibition in Dubai. You would be misplaced because the market share there is certainly more interested in designs with blinking and striking colors,” added Elina. The discussion was concluded with sharing about the efforts of the government in export and exhibition abroad. Beside of discussion, there is a pottery market that themed “Dibuang Sayang” by Kandura Stdio, Tacit Ceramics, Pori Keramik, and some other ceramic studios.
