BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The 2023 class of Environmental Engineering students at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) organized an event called "Bara Senyap" at Lapangan Cinta, ITB Ganesha Campus, on Monday (30/09/2024). The event successfully drew over 500 participants.
The event’s name carries profound meaning. "Bara" (Eng: embers) symbolizes the earth's rising temperatures, which show no signs of cooling down. Meanwhile, "senyap" (Eng: silent) reflects the silent yet gradual increase in temperature, which the impact can slowly be felt nowadays. Furthermore, “senyap” also represents humanity's apathetic attitude towards this growing crisis, despite being aware of its consequences.
This event aimed to raise awareness among the campus community about the ever-increasing global temperatures. It also encouraged participants to take action, starting with small steps such as walking or cycling to campus, reducing the use of single-use items, and paying more attention to food waste.
Upon arrival, participants passed through "Lorong Bumi" (Eng: Earth Corridor), where students delivered speeches highlighting the current state of the planet and how its ideal state supposed to be. The properties displayed along the corridor illustrated the environmental degradation caused by human activities.
Moreover, participants can visit three booths. First booth is called Meltdown Reality, which educates visitors on the pressing issue of rising global temperatures. The second booth is Global Warming 101, which explains the effects of rising temperature. Lastly, the booth Relieving offers practical actions to mitigate the crisis.
All the properties used in the event were made from recycled items, which is a testament to the commitment of ITB's 2023 Environmental Engineering students to tackle the issue of rising temperatures.
The Chairperson of Bara Senyap, Harits Dodi Hadikusuma, hopes that the event serves as a reminder to the campus community about the urgency of addressing the global warming issue. Thus, he emphasized the need for increased awareness and real everyday actions, such as waste sorting and recycling.
"Hopefully, Bara Senyap can be a platform for us to be more courageous in exploring new things," he stated.
